August 3Aug 3 Cambodia’s Kampong Cham Provincial Court has sentenced Soben Minea to life imprisonment after convicting him of murdering nine members of his own family in one of the country’s most harrowing cases in recent memory. The ruling, delivered on Thursday, is the maximum penalty available under Cambodian law.The killings took place on 23 November last year in Kien Khleang village, Tuol Sambuor commune, Stueng Trang district. Investigators found that Minea first decapitated his mother‑in‑law before setting fire to the family home, killing his wife and eight other relatives as they slept. The victims included children as young as five.Police say Minea confessed during questioning, admitting he had long resented his wife following repeated domestic disputes. Days before the murders, she had moved in with her mother after an argument. When she refused to return home, Minea bought petrol and plotted the attack. Captain Veng Sareth of Tuol Sambor police said: “He admitted that when the victims were asleep, he brought a 10‑litre container, stabbed them to death, then poured petrol on the bodies and set them alight.”The Cambodian National Police, supported by the Child Protection Unit, carried out a meticulous investigation, gathering forensic evidence and reconstructing the sequence of events. Their work led to Minea’s conviction for premeditated murder. Alongside the life sentence, the court ordered him to pay $20,000 in moral damages to the civil plaintiffs. The case has shocked the nation, not only for its brutality but also because the victims were all close relatives. It has reignited debate about domestic violence and family conflict, issues that remain deeply sensitive in Cambodian society. For many, the sentence offers a measure of justice, though the scale of the loss is immeasurable. With Minea now behind bars for life, the court’s decision closes one of the darkest chapters in recent Cambodian criminal history. Yet the memory of nine lives lost in a single night will linger far longer than the legal proceedings.-2026-08-03 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
