The US military is casting an unusually wide net for fresh ideas on how to pressure Iran, in the latest sign Washington is reassessing a campaign that has yet to deliver the decisive outcome President Donald Trump wants. An internal request for "creative and unconventional" proposals has fuelled questions over whether existing military options are reaching their limits.

The outreach comes after weeks of US strikes failed to produce a negotiated breakthrough, leaving the administration under growing pressure to define its next move.

Command Seeks Fresh Thinking

According to reports, a senior officer within U.S. Central Command's intelligence branch circulated an email to a broad group of military analysts asking for new ways to increase pressure on Iran.

Officials stressed that seeking ideas from across the command is consistent with CENTCOM's culture of innovation. However, defence sources also said the move reflects a growing recognition that conventional military options are becoming increasingly constrained.

Diplomatic Push Follows Military Pressure

The email reportedly preceded Trump's public threat to launch another wave of strikes against Iran. That warning was later dropped after Saudi Arabia's crown prince urged de-escalation during direct discussions with the US president.

The bombing campaign is dependent upon his allies in the region continuing to host his air forces. They are no longer particularly enthusiastic.

Mounting strikes from the continental United States would be both extremely inefficient, very expensive and lack the flexibility to react and target rapidly.

Logistical problems abound, munitions stocks are a problem, both for dropping on Iran and air defence of their allies. Apparently fuel supplies for their non nuclear powered warships are a problem.

They have limited ground troops available: 2 Marine Expiditionary units, each of about 2,200 marines, and one airborne brigade, again about 2,000 men. Both are "light infantry" forces with very limitrd supporting arms. Again logistical support is limited. Iran is a large country, with an army several hundred thousand strong, who would be fighting on their home territory, in a war for which they have been preparing for decades.

The large and impressive US surface naval fleet would be extremely vulnerable and would suffer considerable damage and casualties if deployed into the restricted waters of the Straits of Hormuz.

Technically the US military have awesome capabilities but are extremely expensive to use. Geography and logistics, as ever, impose huge restraints.

The threat in the Straits of Hormuz is small fast gunboats and drones, along with shore based missiles. To counter them and to protect/convoy merchant shipping from them you would need to get in close. Are the US Navy willing to do that (or doing that) with their hugely expensive, large and vulnerable ships, designed for high tech warfare in the open seas, in such confined waters?

Any ships which are currently in the Persian Gulf would have to fight their way out through Hormuz, any ships wishing to enter the Gulf would also have to fight through the Straits.

That would, inevitably, mean damaged ships and casualties amongst the crews. Damaged ships have to be repaired. Any dockyard facilities in the Gulf States will be immediate targets for Iran. Any dockyard facilities outside the Gulf will involve long transits, any in Europe mean running the gauntlet of the Houthis.

The best option for the US military would be to remove Trump and his administration from power. They can easily get advice on how to proceed from the Thai Army.

The answer is and has always been very complex and expensive.

How long is the US willing to maintain a blockade, keep sanctions, and military assets in the area?

Iran seems capable of lasting many years with reserve capital and food resource self sufficiency being high.

The military capabilities are widespread, reasonably cheap, and easy to replenish.

Knowing all this information developing an effective plan would take a lot of resources, time, money and a US regime in place.

Most AI puts the possibility at less than 15%.

Definitely understand being open to ideas with this monumental objective in front of you.

The United States has reportedly used up “virtually all” of its stockpile of missiles in five months of war with Iran.

The affected weapons are understood to be the army’s highly accurate surface-to-surface munitions, known ‌as Army Tactical Missile Systems (Atacms) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM). The US has used “virtually all” of these, according to two sources who spoke to Reuters.
