Despite being a seasoned traveller a bit of advice needed please .

Having found the cheapest route for my Mum 83 years old to travel from Newcastle UK Emirates to Bangkok ...then most likely to Penang Air Asia .

We have the option of possibly being in Bkk for xmas but a low probabilty ..so I will book the Air asia ticket on line for BKK to Penang Malaysia ( cheaper over all cost than coming to KL and then Penang and shorter time with better connections ) She is planning to stay 6 weeks . Has any one the experience of booking the luggage through from UK to an Air Asia flight so Mum does not have to collect her luggage and re book into Air Asia . Problem is she can get a visa on demand and go through to get the luggage if that is what she has to do but it will be more than 30 days in principle if they check her return to UK ticket .... Thsi of course is not an issue if the luggage can go right through to Penang with Air Asia but the travel agent in UK staes this will not be possible ??? With China travel I have encountered similar problems of not being able to book luggage through to the final destination .

Air Asia help line have not yet replied .

Any advise .

My experience has been that way as well, that it just isn't possible.

Low cost budget airlines are that way for many reasons, one of is they don't have to pay baggage handlers handling transit baggage.

No connection at all, she will have to take the luggage herself from Emirates flight to Air Asia.

Check baggage allowance, low cost may rip her off for anything heavier than 15kg of luggage.

She will also have to clear immigration in bangkok before collecting the baggage. You need to allow a lot of time. The AirAsia ticket is worthless if she misses the connection.

What to do? OK, request special assistance with Emirates, tell them she needs a wheelchair. A helper will wheel her all the way from the plane past Immigration, collect her bags, then onto Air Asia, Its a free service and most suitable for elderly people.

A good idea however, it still doesn't solve the problem of flight delays. Better he pays a liitle extra and uses a full service carrier. Indeed, if I was planning a trip for someone of that age, my priority would be to make it as simple as possible, rather than saving a few pounds.

Quite right. AirAsia is a point to point carrier. So even withing Thailand you cannot book luggage to a further location. Ie. CNX to BKK then you have to collect your baggage and put in in again to travel on to Phuket.

If she is coming Economy on Emirates, baggage allowance is the same, both carriers are strict. AirAsia does have preferential boarding for seniors.

I have travelled many times with both Emirates and Air Asia. There is definatly no way to "through book" luggage. Emirates SYD./BKK no probloms ever with 28kg.but Air Asia extreemly strict with 15 kg. Each extra kg, or part thereoff costs 80 Baht BKK/ USB

wrong information given above:

1) baggage allowance is NOT the same on Emirates and AirAsia. Emirates Economy is 20 KG, AirAsia is 15 KG. AirAsia is very strict indeed (thats how they actually make their money), cannot comment on Emirates departing the UK.

2) AirAsia does NOT have any preferential boarding for seniors anymore since they introduced their "Express-boarding" system, which will cost an additional 200 Baht for the BKK - PEN route....
