Farm/farming In Thailand

Hi All

I am thinking of looking into the possibility of buying a farm for a Thai friend in Issan.

In the future I would like a house built on this farm for me to live in when I retire.

Would this be possible? I have no intention of ever wanting to work on the farm.

As anyone got any clues as to where I would start to gather information whilst I am in the UK ready for my return to Thailand.

Sorry if this response sounds harsh, but my initial reaction to your post is that you're on a wind-up.

Notwithstanding that, you've left way too much out of your post for anyone to give you a beneficial/complete answer.

In particular:

how big is the farm you're looking to buy?

how much are you looking to spend (in particular, is this likely to be more than Bt. 40m)?

do you want to buy the farm in your own name, company name, or Thai [wife's] name?

whilst I know some farang farmers in Thailand, agriculture is actually a restricted business, so it's unlikely you'd be able to farm (even if you wanted to, which you don't). That said, given that it may be a fairly sizeable piece of land, renting the land out for use by others may also be fraught with headaches and problems. With this in mind, what sort of consideration have you given regarding use of the land?

Once I know the answer to these, I may be able to give you a more helpful response.

No I don't find you harsh, and no I am not on a winde up either, not got the time for that.

I simply wanted some general information a link to a web site etc. I cant answer your more definate questions, because I dont have the answers just yet.

I was just looking for some web sites that may have had information as I say whilst I was in the UK.

I will have decided by the time I get to Thailand in a few weeks time what I am looking for, and will at that time probably consult a lawyer who specialises in this kind of thing.

I have read my original post several times and I cant see anything in the post that may have led you into thinking I may have been on a winde up.

In response to your query, so far as I'm aware, there is no particular website catering to your needs. However, a great source of information [on Thai government sites (and some private ones)] is this:

If I were you, I would take a look around that and you may well find some answers.

Remember you're going to have all sorts of problems regarding the purchase of the land, and possibly the utilization of the land. Consequently, it might be an idea to talk to either (or both) Indo-Siam or Sunbelt - both of whom seem to give very sensible advice. In the event they cannot help, I'm confident they'll know someone who can.

you build the house and he can kick you off anytime.....your name will never be on thai land ownership by there law....never....when he drunk your finished.....your house is his by law from the day you give him money to buy.........I'm a brit and your nuts if you go with this idea.....sorry its to the point...but you loose all.....and he smiley even now....again you do it your nuts...

I've bought farm land in Isaan thru my (Thai) wife and will be building on it in a few years. No real problems and no solicitors involved.

If you're concerned about your security of tenure you could get a 30 years lease (extendable) on the land where you want to build - I think you would need a solicitor to organise this.

Not a lot you can do from UK - get your friend to look around to identify the plot/s, often better (cheaper) if a farang is not around.

However, there is a phrase often mentioned on this site: "Don't invest more in Thailand than you are prepared to walk away from".
