US launches region's first avian influenza depot in Thailand

BANGKOK: -- The US on Tuesday launched Asia's first avian influenza combat depot in Thailand to supply emergency kits to fight new outbreaks in the region of the H5N1 virus that has killed at least 235 people worldwide.

"The Regional Distribution Centre in Thailand, the first of three regional supply centres that are being established worldwide, will help ensure countries in Asia will be able to take fast action to counter avian influenza without endangering the lives of the rapid-response teams," said US Ambassador to Thailand Eric John.

The centre, in a warehouse near Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport, is stocked with 45,000 pieces of personal protective equipment, 440 decontamination kits, 10 laboratory specimen kits and four training packs, all of which are valued at 548,300 dollars.

The project was sponsored by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for speedy deployment to contain avian influenza outbreaks in the Asian region.

Enlightened self-interest.

Prevention (of it reaching the shores of the USA) is better than cure (of it, if it did).

Nice start to the thread.

Who, along with Martin WON'T be heading there or contacting them if they and their loved ones are in danger?

That after all would be double cynical and self interest at an even higher level wouldn't it. Remember that Martin. Even if you ever think for one minute that you would send your baby there if it was close and the baby had it, you are are much worse than what you just said about the USA!

Perhaps the USA should have stood aside as Venzueala, Somalia, Mexico, Cuba et all (you get the picture) all rushed over here to deal with the matter.

Prevention is better than cure.

I am sure that there is some self interest on the part of the US. This area of the world is where it will start. If it gets going strong, then it will be hard to stop. Best to nip it in the bud for everyones sake, including the US.

Add to the list of the countries that did not rush to setup centers ; UK, EU, Russia, Canada, Australia...

A little off topic, but when are we going to start calling the European Union the country, and France and Germany just two of the states. Instead of the United States of America, it will be the European Union of States. Same thing the USA did, it was just 200 years ago.

Maybe some countries did not "rush" to setup centers but they are hepling in ways you are unaware of. Health Canada works closely with the CDC and has established a state of the art microbiology lab in Manitoba intended to augment and backup CDC activities. The Canadian government funds specific projects in Asia intended to address avian flu. These activities are conducted with the co-operation of New Zealand and Australian health authorities. Despite the assumption that some may have, there is a strong working relationship between these nations and that includes the funding of foreign projects. When there is a health crisis in Asia, the first calls are made to Australia to put swat teams on the ground to get the process rolling because Australia has one of the most advanced infectious disease labs in the area. Plus some of their researchers are hotties. :o

PhilHarries Dear,

Should we consider this open discussions or open-minded discussions?

I heard from a friend that heard from her hairdresser that read on the internet that the Academy of Brain Science in Lichtenstein invented a device that can read one's mind, assuming of course, there is a mind to read. Perhaps this has a dire relationship to the microchipping plan to prevent the spread of the avian flu!!!!
