Dr Apichart Siwayathorn, director of the hospital said that Samak has influenza type A. Food poisoning is a side effect of the influenza which included fever and coughing, the doctor said. Doctors recommended Samak to stay at the hospital for a few more days. george Posted April 1, 2008 Author Share Posted April 1, 2008 Foul fish fells Thai PM; calls in sick: Spokesman BANGKOK: -- Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej was unable to attend his weekly cabinet meeting Tuesday and cancelled other official functions throughout the day after suffering from food poisoning while attending a two-day regional summit in Laos, a government spokesman said. The food-friendly premier apparently encountered an unfriendly fermented fish in a Lao open market, while exploring the culinary delights of the neighbouring country. Mr. Samak, 72, has had an upset stomach due to food poisoning since Monday while attending the six-nation Greater Mekong Sub-region summit in the Lao capital of Vientiane and returned home on the same day, government spokesman Wichianchot Sukchotrat said. The premier was admitted to a Bangkok hospital, Mr. Wichianchot said, adding that the illness forced the premier to cancel all official functions schedule for today on his doctor's advice. He is expected to return to work on Wednesday, according to the government spokesman. Earlier the premier's close aide said the lack of enough sleep and frequent visits to various southeast Asian countries may have taken toll on Mr Samak's health. The premier travelled extensively to introduce himself and to strengthen relations with the 10-member ASEAN grouping after assuming office in early February, following the December 2007 general election. george Posted April 1, 2008 Author Share Posted April 1, 2008 Update: Samak has flu, hospitalised 'a few days' BANGKOK: -- Doctors at Bumrungrad Hospital, where Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej was admitted on Tuesday morning, said the premier has influenza. Mr Samak is advised to remain in hospital for a few more days. No visitors are allowed. Earlier reports said Mr Samak had food poisoning after eating fermented fish at an outdoor market in Vientiane, Laos, on Monday. He was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning, and all work schedules were cancelled for the rest of the day. The cabinet held its weekly meeting without him. Deputy Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat chaired the meeting. My Food-Hygiene course taught us that they were two seperate diseases, not one a side-effect, of the other ? Doctors recommended Samak to stay at the hospital for a few more days. plachon Posted April 2, 2008 Share Posted April 2, 2008 How can food poisoning be a side affect of the Flu?Either you have food poisoning from eating bad food or you dont Probably only a case of foot in mouth disease, where after Samak's own spokesman had blabbed to the press that it was food poisoning from Laos that was to blame, they suddenly remembered how sensitive Thai-Lao relations can be and incidents in the past, such as when a Thai soap star (Nicole?) said something about Lao women never washing and raised the ire of all Laos, whipped up by none other than the industrious Lao Women's Union! The burning of the Thai Embassy incident in Phnom Penh also probably sprang to mind in retracting the comment and blaming anything else, even flu, for the food poisoning. Mr. Samak appeared in good physical condition and was smiling as he left Bumrungrad International Hospital. He declined to be interviewed by reporters but promised to answer every question in his weekly "Meet the Press" session on Friday at Government House. Hospital staff said that the PM wanted to have privacy while resting another day at his house before going back to work on Friday. The PM was admitted to Bangkok's most luxurious private hospital on Tuesday after returning from a regional summit in Laos. Bagwan Posted April 3, 2008 Share Posted April 3, 2008 I 'googled' type A influenza and read a dozen or so reports including one from CDC. Not one mentions diarrhoea or throwing up, nor does it make mention of complications that would produce those symptoms. Influenza is a viral disease of the respiratory tract and the virus is common amongst feral birds. I doubt very much that Mr. Big contracted the ailment from fermented fish, unless somebody already afflicted had coughed or sneezed on it a short time before. Perhaps he has only caught a cold - from a fire engine maybe? How anybody could confuse influenza with food poisoning is beyond my understanding. It would seem that the Press have misreported (again!), the original diagnosis was made by somebody with an imperfect understanding of common ailments or this is yet another 'smoke and mirrors' exercise from yet another incompetent Thai government. Although he might have to leave the country soon though as his "condition" is beyond the capabilities of Asia's "medical hub"... his pending 2-year-prison sentence notwithstanding... Chalerm to visit Samak Minister of Public Health Police Captain Chalerm Yoobamrung planned to visit former prime minister Samak Sundaravej after learning the latter was sick of poisonous food. Police Captain Chalerm said today (October 6) that there was no communication between him and the former premier Samak since the former Thai leader has been sick of poisonous food and was admitted at Bamrungrad hospital. So, he was not aware of how serious and what type of sickness Samak was. Police Captain Chalerm also said he was not aware the former prime minister's illness was so serious to the extent that he had to travel to treat the illness overseas. But personally, the Minister of Public Health was anxious about Samak's illness and planned to visit him soon. plachon Posted October 18, 2008 Share Posted October 18, 2008 ln all seriousness, for any gourmands with a penchant for uncooked pla daek, like the esteemed ex-PM, then there is a good chance you may end up with liver cancer as the old boy claims. Isaan as one of the highest rate of liver cancer in the world, if not THE highest, and pla daek is considered a contributory factor, along with the strong hooch and other lifestyle factors. I'm not sure if it is the pla daek itself to blame though, rather than the damage done to liver by the flukes contained within and then the strong drugs used to flush those flukes out that ruin their livers.
