PAD Lay Siege On Government House, NBT TV Station

I would be amazed if they backed down on the basis of appearing to the whole country that one guy with a microphone and 30,000 in the park made them do it. If they have no way to go honorably, they would rather there was a coup.

As mentioned previously, Samak has had his hands personally in more then one coup attempt and was active or at least supportive in the shootings of demonstrators before. This should be an old scenario for him, where he just follows his proven book.

That demonstrators have not been shot yet and the PAD then as reaction have not acted even more aggressive than the lawless mob they are right now is the real surprise.

As "Farangs" you can have absolutely NO INFFLUENCE on what happens here...you are all guests of the Thai Authorities.

I have been on TV for years but don't comment on anything that I have no influence over,,,so you all flame each other, argue, and MISS THE POINT.

You are wasting youyr time and taking up valuable space on TV with your drivel...you can't control waht's going down and you don't have a say in it.

If this was happening in your own country then your comments would be worthwhile...but this IS NOT your homeland, so why do you waste valuable space saying "Shoot them, <deleted> them...kick him out" ...you CANNOT do it, so just LEAVE IT ALONE..listen to the news and..

<deleted>

I NEVER get involved in Political <deleted> as i know I cannot change things...maybe some of you think you are special...but I doubt it.

Listen to the Thai People like the good lady that owns City Life.....she is upset about what is happening in HER country, but it is HER COUNRTY, not yours..so BUT OUT...listen to the news and make your plans accordingly

Oh. Sorry. What about sports? We can't affect the outcome of that either. Just let us know, please. We will be waiting for your instruction.

Samak seems intent on dragging this out huh?

Even if he wanted to quit, he has a duty to his supporters not to. I doubt he would quit. He is not allowed to use force so the demonstrations will go on until they get tired and go home. I think that may be why the PPP supporters will try to incite violence to force the police to act on the current situation. No one should ever label a coup as bloodless for a least 5 years.

This is Thailand. He will find it very difficult to fall on sword for some unconfirmed common good. It would also set a very dangerous precedent which I am sure some pretty important people realise may not necessarily be the best result for the country either. There have been PMs deposed by coups. There have been PMs told to step down because the CIA claimed they were drug dealers. There is not a precedent for this in Thailand.

If the top tells him to go, he can go with some kind of face. If the army come in he can have some kind of face.

He may find a way to survive if he can draw this out to the middle of next week and the general population get seriously pissed off with the unions for striking and there being no trains. It also gives time for PPP support to get organised also. It may happen, it may not. But his stated refusal to stand down is a bid to buy time, which from the situation he is right now is pretty much his only option.

But what about probable PPP disolution on Sept 2nd Tuesday.

Wednessday may be a LOONG way off this week.

Can the pass the law and let them off the hook sunday and monday...?

Amazing Thailand.

Walking away from a legal decision on Tuesday, looks a hel_l of a lot better to everyone than giving up coz of the PAD.

tis true, face before logic, and the good of the country.

I will watch his cooking show.

I like to cook, I've heard he IS good at that.

These guys don't back down. It isn't in their character. This for any other reason is why Sondhi won't get what he wants. PPP/Govt have no way out without losing all of their face and there are some real heavyweights in there who have succeeded in being in and around the centres of power for 30 years.

I would be amazed if they backed down on the basis of appearing to the whole country that one guy with a microphone and 30,000 in the park made them do it. If they have no way to go honorably, they would rather there was a coup.

That goes a long way to explain the number of coups in this country too.

Let's hope the courts get this right and quickly.

I think PAD might be satisfied if their holding action prevented a re-write

of the PPP escape clause.

Happening to know the good lady from city life quite well, I am not sure she would appreciate you discouraging people from exercising their freedom to discuss the current political situation in Thailand. In fact I may ask her the next time I happen to see her. Whilst she definitely wouldn't encourage anyone to resort to enciting anyone to shoot anyone, I think she would probably encourage such discourse as it may help people to understand Thai culture a little more.

I think we all understand your point. But please understand this is something we all feel very deeply about and a lot of people are very worked up. This is probably a good place to blow off steam. I don't think we are hurting anyone. I do totaly agree with you that no one should be advocating violence. Sorry if I offended you with my sarcasm.

So how does this affect you personally?

While it probably doesn't apply to a lot of members here, someone else mentioned earlier that quite a few members here have Thai families (wives/husbands, kids, in-laws), and a number of others work here/employ Thais in their business.

Some are long term residents that could be affected depending who ends up in power (remember what happened shortly after the military took over last time, and suddenly Immigration started enforcing the old rule about only being able to stay in country 90 out of 180 days ? Put the kibosh on a lot of people that used to do monthly border runs, which also affected the business of the companies that specialise in border runs).

Some of these events will have direct impact on their lives, for others the impact may be indirect (i.e. someone working in the manufacturing industry that suddenly can't get his product to market because the trains/airports are shut down, or his staff suddenly start calling in sick to go support one side or the other).

I can't do anything to change the situation, but I do talk to my Thai friends about it. Maybe if I can explain to them how this isn't good for the country, they may have a different opinion of the situation.

I don't think that any of us Non-Thai's on TV feel that we have any influence over matters, but what is wrong with us having and expressing out opinion.

I do have opinions and concerns about this, Thailand has been my home for 8 years, I pay taxes but more importantly both my wife and daughter are Thai and such thinks can/will have a direct influence on then. Therefore I (Along with many others here) do give a shit and are well within their rights to give a shit, whether they be pro or anti PAD/PPP.

When I came to Thailand and ceased being a permanent resident in the UK I forfeitted my right to vote for my country, does that mean that I no longer have a right to have an opinion on what Gordon Brown is up to and therefore should <deleted>?

And take Burma as another example. Despite the atrocities that occur there, we have no say as to what happens (Neither do the Burmese for that matter), does that mean that we are wrong for discussing the matter and showing concern for them?

You have contradicted yourself already by even posting on this thread, if you don't like it then leave it alone and <deleted> yourself.

Disaster of a post you made here TP - I'll say it out straight.

I doubt there's a poster on here that is blind to the fact how much they influence the situation here, but when events occur in the in the world, I (like most other human beings) have an opinion on them, and sometimes I feel the need to share this opinion. Communication ya see - top drawer stuff. Just like I talk about current events with both Thai and Farang friends over a beer or ten, I also like to read opinions and post opinions of other people beyond my usual realm. Enter the TV News Forum.

And you know what? I've not heard one Thai person *ever* telling me to "BUT OUT" when talking about the political situation with them. Not one. If anything, it's usually the utter opposite. Just like learning the language people are pleased that you're taking an active interest in the current affairs of the country you choose to live in.

And as for the "valuable space", the contents of this thread in bytes so far could easily be compared to two or three pics in the "Hot Bum / Good Ass Thread". Choices choices.

Govt Defiant

Coalition parties firmly back Samak, believe solution rests with Parliament

Coalition parties yesterday threw their support behind Samak Sundaravej, giving the embattled prime minister a new political lifeline amid growing concerns the ongoing crisis would turn violent.

Antigovernment protesters led by the People's Alliance for Democracy laid siege to Government House on Tuesday, triggering a national crisis.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, coalition partners of the People Power Partyled government rejected any call for the resignation of Samak.

"He will continue to be our leader," PPP secretarygeneral Surapong Suebwonglee told the media.

He said the government will work to "contribute to the wellbeing of the country" and will work together to look for ways to get out of the current politฌical crisis at today's joint Parliamentary session.

"The fact that the Thai Khufa [govฌernment seat] was seized does not mean an end to state power," Surapong said. "We had been working all last week and we will continue to work in the coming weeks."

Surapong said he believed the Parliament session will be the best way to get out of the current predicament, and ruled out any suggestion of disฌsolving the House.

"We are not thinking of any other way out, neither dissolving the House nor resigning. This will not be a guarฌantee that this kind of crisis will not reoccur," Surapong said.

"Does this mean that a government must resign every time a group seizes [Government House]?" Surapong asked rhetorically. "This is like solving a problem on a daytoday basis."

Surapong said today's debate would not touch on the issue of Constitutional reform.

Chart Thai Party leader Banharn Silpaarcha said, "There is no need to replace Samak."

Banharn said Samak was busy and therefore could not take part in the press conference.

Leader of Pracharaj Party, Snoh Thienthong, said party politics would be put aside tomorrow when all parฌties, including the opposition and members of the Upper House, take part in the debate that will be centred on the current crisis.

Adding to the growing concern that Samak may be retreating from his earฌlier plea that force would not be used to quell the PAD protests, a rival group is gathering in Sanam Luang where, according to a People Power MP, Jatuporn Promphan, up to 100,000 progovernment demonstrators are expected to arrive today.

As of last night, several thousands of progovernment Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) supporters were present at Sanam Luang. They plan to march to Parliament to give Samak much needฌed moral support.

Samak returned to Bangkok yesฌterday evening after a muchanticiฌpated audience with HM the King. Dozens of reporters waited for him but the prime minister managed to elude them by getting off the plane at a difฌferent location.

Earlier in the day, Samak had said he sought an audience with HM the King to brief him on the rising politiฌcal tensions following the ongoing protests. He was apparently trying to quash rumours that his audience with the King signalled an intention to step down.

"I will not back down and will not resign as demanded by the protesters led by the People's Alliance for Democracy. I will continue my duties for the sake of the country. I am appointed as a prime minster by the laws, so if I have to quit, I will quit according to the laws, not because of threats from protesters."

The premier flew to Klai Kangwon Palace late on Friday night, expecting to be granted an audience with HM the King. However, he reportedly failed to do so and returned to Bangkok yesฌterday morning. He then returned to Klai Kanwon Palace yesterday afternoon.

Pro-government demonstrators to march Parliament at 7 am

The pro-government demonstrators plan to march from Sanam Luang to Parliament at 7 am to show moral support to Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej.

They plan to rally at Sanam Luang throughout the night.

They said they would use the route to avoid protesters led by the People's Alliance for Democracy.

DAAD counter-rally sets up its own shop

By The Sunday Nation

Published on August 31, 2008

A pro-government rally was staged yesterday afternoon at Sanam Luang urging people to oppose the overthrow of the Samak Sundaravej government through "anarchist means" by the People's Alliance for Democracy.

The group's leaders vow to oppose any new administration installed by the PAD if the current administration is ousted by street rallies. The rally was attended by thousands wearing red, but the crowd grew by the evening.

Deputy government spokesman Nattawut Sai-gua said the group would hit a gong to call for a mass rally instead of blowing a whistle as the PAD did.

"The PAD shouldn't think that its whistles alone are capable of staging a mass rally. We will beat a gong to announce our democratic move. We won't hand over our country to the PAD. If the government falls due to anarchist activities by the PAD and is replaced by a new regime supported by the PAD, then we shall consider it a nominee of the PAD and will call for an even bigger protest to oppose it," he said.

Nattawut is a former leader of the pro-Thaksin, anti-coup Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD). He said DAAD had yet to discuss whether to fully revive the movement.

A group calling itself "Taxi for Democracy" set up a stage nearby to denounce PAD actions. The group is also gathering signatures in support of Samak and will have them handed to the embattled premier amid speculation over whether he will resign.

The group said it could not remain idle any longer when the PAD had done such damage to the country.

Interesting.Anyone that believes that Toxin et-el is NOT the puppet master to some degree is in need of a check up.

I don't believe the self-exiled Thaksin is pulling any strings. Were do you suggest I get my checkup?

i am 'self-exiled' but have no warrants at home, no lost bail, no frozen assets. i'd rather call tax-sin a criminal fugitive who jumped bail. would you not try to 'pull any strings' which could bring you closer to your lost several billions? if not, i can recommend a good shrink and some mental hospitals where you are treated with utmost care and checked up at an affordable price...........

Thanks for your pm. I made my opinion clear. I don't find it reasonable for people with opposing points of view to claim that the person with differing views is mentally retarded...get it?

sorry tropo, you did not read my post carefully enough (can you read?)

1. it was you yourself first to ask: Were do you suggest I get my checkup? i just did respond to your own wish and never said, you are 'retarded'. those are your own words. lets stay fair in public.....

2. i repeat it now and here again and if you wish to include yourself, you're free to do so: everyone who would not pull any string to get back some billions in frozen assets needs a checkup! did you get that? do you still have differing views? or do you still insist in your mad argument, that tax-sin is not pulling any strings? (the argument is mad, perhaps not you!)

Samak was NOT elected. He was appointed buy the PPP which was elected. As far as being paid to vote, that is bullshit too. That is just another crutch that is being used by the People AGAINST Democracy. Some people here are just as disillusioned and the people who follow these anarchists.

Dear.

Please stop spreading this BS here, will you? because I, as a Farang, have no connections whatsoever to PAD nor PPP, i just can't stand the latter but neither can i stand what PAD is doing in regards to the airports (demonstrations - ok).

BUT i have been sitting on the Veranda of my boyfriend's mum's house when a group of 4 older guys came for a quick visit, handing out PPP stickers to be used on motorbikes or cars, and 200 Baht to each person who promised to vote for PP in the upcoming election (which was 5 days later). After they were done at this house, they went on to the neighbour's (my boyfriend's uncle who is a farmer) and same spiel.

My boyfriend's mum, btw, refused to take the money and didn't vote for them either. but his uncle did both - took the money and voted for them.

I myself have not been close to any of PAD's protest sites as i have no business there, so imagine your connections between them and me which ever way you like, i am telling you PPP did indeed BUY their election win, i am an eye witness, and YOU are talking BS.

Back on topic, as much as i personally dislike PAD disrupting ordinary people's business by blocking the airports, if i were them, i'd do much heavier things - such as shutting down Thai TV stations 3, 7 and 9. If ordinary Thais don't get their daily soaps, they WOULD press for a resolution to the problem VERY QUICKLY. May sound funny, but sadly is not. As of now, Somchai just isn't interested in what's going on as long as his own daily life is not affected.

I remember in my home country, that happens to be Germany, all started with a few demonstrations in the east. Those got larger and larger, and yes, roads were blocked, windows thrown in and even cars set on fire (which seems to be the standard procedure for EVERY demonstration/protest in France??) but in the end we got the re-unification of Germany and ultimately the collapse of the Sovjet Union and the end of the cold war.

It started with a mob on the streets of what was then called GDR, against the "elected" government of that country.

So let PAD protest, they have their chance NOW - if PPP stays in power they will amend the constitution to make sure they will stay in power indefinitely and can't even democratically be removed. A certain Austrian named A***f H****r did the exact same some 70-ish years ago, and, as opposed to the PPP, he didn't even pay the voters.

Best regards.....

Thanh

my wife's friend has set up a sum tum stand somewhere inside of the government house - she is paying 3000 baht a day in rent and is seeing a profit of 5-6000 baht a day so far

waoh, thats pretty good, so the demonstration creates profitable workplaces! i calculate: 6000 profit + 3000 rent (goin' to the 'insurgents' or to samak?) + lets say 1000 for papaya & stuff = 10000 baht revenue. for how much she sell? 30 baht? that would be 330 portions a day, at how many minutes per portion? pok pok 1 minute each? plus taking orders, cashing in, giving change, preparing, cutting etc etc. very diligent indeed. after 6 hours relentlessly pok pok i would be finished. keep on the good job and wish, that these demos never end. its always a great satisfaction to me to hear that these protesters are not only evil and harmful to business, but boost the economy......

They always end up imitating the PAD and end up with a flop.

Now they are planning to provoke the PAD by marching to Parliament?

Is this Nattawut one of the main PTV zombies? The fat little one whose eyes always look like he's just smoked a fat one or two and is always in a state of contemplation when higher power is in the same room? Too f*&^ stupid to even wait on the court's decision regarding TRT ver 2.0's dissolution on Tuesday.

If they are allowed to march to the PAD rally... :o Shame on this government for allowing it.

If they are prevented from reaching PAD's location, I can easily see them ending up confronting police to get there, that's how hungry and desperate Thaksin's zombies are at the smell of yet again, dissolution.

I do not know from what cave you Tony Clifton are barking and weather you are in Thailand at all but you are an absolute idiot.

Notice that the last PAD action regarding airports mostly hurts foreigners. I am not surprised: PAD is among other things a xenophobic organization and IMHO they may start hurt foreigners if their leadres decide that it is in their interests.

I am glad to here the news that PPP finally start to mobilize their supporters to move to BKK. This is the only reasonable way out. PAD claims that they started a "revolution". Hey, it is time for people to do just that. I sincerely hope that it is going to happen.

Samak should go: it is not about him , it is about the Thailand.

Hope there are PPP leadres who understand that. The time is running out. For the sake of Thailand they need to act now.

I may be an idiot but I seriously wonder what you are wishing for the PPP supporters to mobilize in Bangkok for a very possible confrontation, maybe you are blood thirsty, or another one of those murderers on the run hiding in Thailand? Disgusting. :o Are you aware they are threatening to march to parliament tomorrow at 7am??? You think they're going over there to shake hands and exchange t-shirts after a Bangkok-N.Eastern cultural exchange? Have you enjoyed their last attack on the PAD? Or maybe you prefered when they attacked Democrats and destroyed their stage? How about World PLaza and the old men being roughed up?
