limbos
There are regular buses and mini buses from Phuket to Samui. I would expect the regular buses to take the old route through the mountains and the mini buses to take the new road just before Krabi. No idea about costs, but the ferry from Don Sak to Samui is about an hour and a half to two hours and the trip by regular bus should be around 5 to 6 hours, a minibus which goes straight probably around 4 hours. Add to this the ferry time.

LivinginKata
There are regular buses & mini buses from Phuket to Samui, several times per day. The public buses leave from the main bus station just opposite the Royal city hotel in Phuket Town. Cost used to be about 500 baht including the ferry (bus goes on the ferry). Mini bus book through tour desk, expect more expensive (guess about 1,200 baht) but can get pick-up in Patong. Expect at least 6 hours, including the almost 2 hour ferry trip. Public bus a bit longer if stops in Surat Thani. Edited December 19, 2008 by LivinginKata
1000baht
I did it last year, and wish i would have flown, im not sure on the airfare prices, 2-3000 THB , if moneys not an issue, fly. But then again, the ferry ride is a good time to relax if its a nice day outside.
girlx
be careful if you take one of the tourist busses on this route rather than a government bus from the station. the tourist busses are a well known scam- they have thieves that ride in the undercarriage of the bus and break into peoples' luggage, stealing all their valuables. keep all your valuables with you! or better yet, do not support these companies! the worst of the lot is called PP Family Tours. pothai
What should be a pleaseent 3-4 hour drive in a minibus and 1.30 boat ride turns into a very long day. The minibus from Phuket will probably detour to Krabi Town, wait there for an hour or so to collect passengers then off to Surat...another wait there for an hour or 2 then to the ferry....Expect to leave around 7-8am and not arrive in Samui until 8pm....you will be asked in Surat if you want to book a hotel....dont unless you are really desperate and can afford it. Definatly take the plane if you can.
