Hey guys, I will be visiting Chiang Mai in the mid of jan with my gf and her friends. Other than the information that is available online, are there any to see places that arent listed or 3-4 stars accomodation to stay in Chiangmai town area?

What are the must see places in Chiang Mai?

How is the public tranport system?

What is the daily rental rate of local car hires for 6 seaters?

last question! how much the train/bus ride to Chiang Rai? is it worth it to drive there?

cheers!

student from Melbourne!

There have been several threads answering these same old questions...what to do in Chiang Mai. Suggest you do some research before posting this tired subject again. As for the bus to Chiang Rai, sorry, I don't know as I drive up there in my own car. The VIP bus fare is not very much and you can inquire at the bus terminal as to the exact fare and schedule. I am not suffiently familar with the bus system around the city to advise you, but baht buses (songtaews) and metered taxis are plentiful and the normal transportation mode for visitors.

Here you can find all sorts of info about Chiang Rai: http://www.chiangraitouristinformation.com and from this website:

Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai by bus:

Deluxe coaches operated by Greenbus depart Chiang Mai's Arcade Bus Terminal (north of the city, opposite Carrefour and just off the super highway) on a regular basis. The journey takes three hours and costs about 520 baht for a round-trip.

VIP bus to Mae Sai via Chiang Rai leaves Chiang Mai Arcade bus station at 8:00am sharp. 3 hours to Chiang Rai and then another hour to Mae Sai where you can pop over to Burma if you fancy (beware of the 14/15 day entry stamp when coming back into Thailand so best do this towards the end of your stay). You could then catch the VIP bus from Mae Sai to Chiang Rai (I think it leaves at 15:15 so arrives in Chiang Rai about 16:15) stay a night in Chaing Rai and then bus back to Chiang Mai. The VIP bus only has 24 seats so be sure to book in advance and the fare for the above is about 800 baht per person.

Enjoy your stay :o
