hi all

Just got my place here in Malaysia installed with IPstar KU band broadband. I'm on the 1024/256 package and i think there's no download data size limitation. Overall I'm a bit dissapointed with the speed. I can understand the latency, but the 4 days I've been using it, the average speed I got was only 300 kbps (www.testmy.net). Donwload speed is around 38~48kbps .

Anyway, I was just wondering how do you go to the modem (IPX 5100) management console. When the local IPSTAR provider installed the setup they didn't leave me anytihng except the IPX 5100 which has a live internet connection. I did peep the laptop, and saw they accessing the modem via http://192.168.5.1/blah blah....

so if anyone know how I cud access the mgmt console, please post here. There's also a password right ? Also is there any website or wall garden I can access to see the status of my subscription ?

Are you sure about that?

Last time I checked there was a ridicule 300MB or so limit. Meaning you get more speed but you should not use it :o

The password is usually 1234. Try that.

And, I really don't think you get unlimited downloading, either.

Your speeds at www.testmy.net are shameful. Have you run speed tests late in the evening? What are they then?

yeah I'm positive about the download limit, nolimitation set so fat at least not on the contract.

I'll try the that password, but do you have the mgmt URL ?

I ran the test 3am and 5am in the morning and made sure no one else was connected to the internet, still is ###### slow ...is it normal or should I complain ? I'm paying almost usd$300 for montly access fee, how much do you guys pay?

No - He's talking ADSL in Bangkok. - not IPStar...

I was googling for answer of why my new Ipstar setup was slow and found this

"The space industry was sure that 2004 was going to be the year of satellite broadband. Twelve months ago the industry was looking forward to the launch of WildBlue services in the U.S.A., iPSTAR in Asia, and two revolutionary Spaceway spot-beam, Ka-band satellites for HNS. Now, we are at the beginning of 2005, and the iPSTAR satellite is still on the ground, Anik F2 was finally launched in July but WildBlue is anticipating commercial services starting in the second quarter of 2005 at best, and the first two Spaceway satellites are being reconfigured for HDTV broadcasts for DirecTV! "

found it here

if ipstar's satelite is still on the ground then what the h_ell am I on ? Am I on some Taiwanese sat ? Every other time If I go to google or any other website that requires registration it will default my originity to Taiwan. My IP address seemed to be of the ones coming from Bangkok.

The packages sold outside Thailand are completely different from what is available in Thailand. It all depends on the local appointed agent.

In Thailand we get billed by how many Mb we use.

The basic ipstar package costs around 80 US$/month, but for this we only get 750Mb of data traffic on a 256/128 speed. Every 100Mb we go over this limit we pay around 7$ extra. The speed delivered is basically close to what it should be (apart from latency) but I heard that the people who upgraded to 512/256 only got a small speed increase instead of doubling the speed. This seems to indicate that there are limits to what speeds are possible at the moment. This might improve when the Ipstar sattelite gets in the air this year (after a 2 year delay!), as at the moment they are temporary using older transponders on both Thaicom 1 and Thaicom 2/3.

George, Thaicom4 is the Ipstar satelite and not yet in the air!

The latest test are completed and launch is sheduled for March 2005

I think I'm on the Sat 1 satellite. From this url http://www.broadbandxchange.org/regional/c...ders/ipstar.pdf

u can clearly sees that the SAT-1 which has a gateway NOC at Taiwan operates customer in Singapore and Malaysia.

That explains why google always defaults to www.google.com.tw

HOw come my IP add is from Bangkok ? Hmm I 'm still clueless of how this IPStar vsat technology works ..

Google seems to think that your IP is from Taiwan. What makes you thinking that you have an IP from bangkok?

Try: http://192.168.5.100:8080/xWebGateway.cgi?page=traffic The link was leftover in my browser history after the technicians finished their install.

I have access to how much data I've uploaded/downloaded as well as current signal strength/speed. There are a few other tabs from which you could probably find some trouble, however you need an admin password. The "1234" as suggested here didn't work for me.

I'm on the Star Express Megabit 1 512/128 1.5GB program for 5000 baht per month. I'm getting between ~256 to ~512 download and right around 128 upload (just tested at 270/115). The plan was only 500 baht more a month than the 256/128 1.5GB plan... worth the extra money in my opinion. It's past mid-month and without being careful, but not careless (no movies), I'm at 500MB total data transferred. I don't see your plan here in Thailand.. closest is a Corporate unlimited plan 256/64 for 9500 baht. http://www.csloxinfo.com/broadband/ipstar4_en.asp

hope the link works and is what you were looking for.
