Memory Sticks - 512mb, 1gb

I'm looking to get a memory stick. I'd like one that I can use to transfer a lot of data, rather than burning a CD. Anybody come across any of 512mb or more? Been looking at the usual locations, but nothing, except for measley 128's or 254's.

I bought couple of fuji 512's from tohome.com just before New Year. They have a store off lower Sukumwit, too. About 5,000bt each.

Bought a couple of Sony MSs at Pantip Plaza about a year ago but think they were only 128.mb

I think the author of the post has his terms confused. A "memory stick" refers to the Sony proprietary flash memory card, which is used primarily in Sony cameras, camcorders, notebooks, and other Sony products. I think, however, that he was actually referring to the "thumb drive" or "flash drive", which is a flash memory accessory which plugs into any USB port and has various sizes.

Anyways, the larger size thumb drives aren't popular (because of price) and so can't be found very easily. If you really want size, what you can do is buy a mini card reader, one that plugs into the USB port, and then buy a compact flash card. A 1MB CF card is pretty easy to find, and costs around 3,000 baht. You can also find larger 2GB sizes at photo shops.

Why not just go the next step and buy a portable USB hard drive?

I have a 40gig that plugs into my USB port and cost me 8000 baht from tukcom Sriracha. It is as big as a pack of smokes.

Now I cannot see the point in playing around with thumb drives etc, especially at 3000 baht for only 1Mb

Well, thumb drives are actually quite smaller and lighter than a portable 2.5" HDD. They don't require any usb cables. They're also a lot more tolerant of abuse. Drop a thumb drive, and it keeps on ticking. Drop your portable HDD, and chanes are you'll lose at least some data. Of course, there is a choice, and you buy whatever best suits your needs.

I've seen a few 2GB cards in Fortune IT Mall recently, some of the PDA shops have them, and there are a couple of small stalls on the upper level as well.

Haven't seen the 521Mb memorysticks a lot, however the 256 ones are only around 1300 Baht (or less).

A couple of those would probably serve your needs.

And portable Hard drives are certainly an option for people needing to take Gb's around, but if you only need to take a couple of hundreds of Mb these sticks are certainly very convenient!

You're right. I was confused. I'm talking about a thumb drive. Given the prices of the 512MB, I might have to make do with the 256, which might actually serve my needs.

I have a CF card reader, so am aware of that option, but I don't really want to be lugging the thing around.

I was referering to a "mini" CF card reader, vs typical card readers that are about half the size of a floppy drive. These are only slightly larger than a CF card and plug directly into the USB port (without USB cables), like a thumb drive. Here is an example of what I'm talking about:

Do you have to buy in Thailand? Because 512MB USB thumb drives can be had for 1400 baht in the USA including shipping. And 2GB CF for 3600 baht. Best have a friend bring you one as it will save a lot of cash.

FYI .... 1Gig SD cards go for $75 in the States.

So 3000B and the card is haf the size of a CF card.

Got a 512mb Kingston DataTraveller for Bt1,990 at Dinosaur in Fortune Town. They had 1gb models for 5,700 baht! Yikes. Also looked at card readers, thinking I'd go that route. CF and SD cards are cheaper per mb, but didn't make hard notes of the prices. Rather than carry around more cords, cards and gear, I settled for the thumb drive anyway.
