Phuket sucks, it's overpriced, shabby and the locals are all out to rook the tourists

Pattaya is no worse than Phuket, just bigger, and at least the prices are right.

If you don't need the beach life head north towards Chiang Mai

I agree - just watch your bum for barnacles. i.e. if you're in Phukett stay away from the Aussie bar if you're in Pattaya keep your hand on your ha'penny or the lady boys will have a field day. I suggest Mai Pim or Dolphin Bay if you want to really get away from the crowds :)

Phuket: Beautiful, The best by Far. A bit pricey but worth it. Not as many losers/dropouts around.

Pattaya: A complete dump, overrun by Ruskies, BGs, LadyBoys, old war vets that never left the 70s.

HuaHin: Mediocre Beaches with horseshit everywhere, loads of Scans/Norwegies/Danes, ugly BGs, lame bars.

Cha-am: Localized mostly for Thais, Farang generally not well liked here, rooms are cheap but very nasty.

Phuket has it all, but life there costs more.

Yes Phuket has it all-inflated prices, prostitutes in abundance, sex tourists in abundance (although numbers are down right now), farang tasting food (not authentic Thai) and expensive taxis.

Avoid at your peril..........

Head north mate............

Well, unless you are going for sex and nothing else, i suggest you spend one night at Pattaya and then get the first flight out to Phuket.

Your question Pattaya beach or Phuket island.

The beach at Pattaya consists of a coarse gritty sand something like the 'deco' that plumbers put in their drainage trenches! Visitors prefer to use the hotel swimming pools.

Pattaya is on the Gulf of Thailand which is virtually an inland sea and at Pattaya the sewerage is pumped straight in, so if you are a "darkie" diver.............good luck.

Apart from those sleezy night bars full of prostitutes there is really nothing else to see or do.

Phuket is on the beautiful Andaman Coast the beaches are of lovely fine sand and there is lots to do and see on the island, also it is within a short distance of Phi Phi island and Krabi. Some really good day tours to be had.

There are plenty of nice restaurants and Bang La road has tons of bars like Pattaya and in my opinion, the girls of Southern Thailand are much nicer than the farm girls from Issaan which populate the bars of Pattaya.

Patong beach is quite nice and i recommend the Seaview Hotel at the quiet end of Patong beach.

Incidentially i am a Samui lover and Cheong Mon is my beach.

Enjoy Thailand , it is definately not fcuked, its big beautiful and can be very exciting, just move around if you have the time.

Good luck............... :D

Phuket and Pattaya? Neither! Who are these people that are advising you to head here? Both areas are heavily populated by sleazy westerners who seem to head there in their droves looking for cheap sex. If thats your MO then you probably want to head to Phuket. Choose somewhere else and experience the real Thailand and real Thai people. I would suggest heading north. Chang Mai is a really good place to start.

My opinion...

Phuket. Patong is a dump but most of the rest of the island is stunning. Head to the north of the island for some of the most beautiful desterted beaches. Avoid the westernized areas and you'll find it not too expensive and have a great time. Pattaya is fun, great nightlife. Krabi aslo has some beautiful beaches and the local islands are stunning. Hua Hin and Cha Am I found a little strange, not really sure what they wanted to be. Koh Samui again has great beaches but is getting completely over developed these days. There are still a few nice areas though.

North of Thailand - Chiang Mai is ok for a visit I guess - obviously no beaches and fairly unispiring nightlife. Chiang Rai and Pai are better. For a real Thailand experience avoid all these places and head somewhere like Khon Ken, Naknon Sri Thammarat or Looi.

Yes I agree with that, Phuket is very beautiful (still), but expensive. In Pattaya you are only 2 hours away from Bangkok and airport. In the end it is completely up to you what kind of lifestyle you are looking for, as we all all different. Best to go to all the places and stay maybe a month or so and then make up your mind.

Enjoy :)

Goto Vietnam or Cambodia, better value for money less chance of problems.

In the last 5 years i've been (Bangkok apart) only in Phuket, Patong and beaches around (Kata is magic) are simply wonderful, and in july-august i've always found a good weather (always sunny, without need of aircon). Very beautiful thai females are less available in august because there are too many tourists that look for them like gold finders. And it's quite cheap if u go to bungalow (a lot of good ones for 500baht/day), you can have a good meal with 2-300 baht, 500 baht for seafood. You can rent a scooter for 150-200 baht/day (i love to drive across Phuket, all beahes are 15-20 minutes far from each other), remember the drive licence!

I'm thinking to spend 1-3 days in Pattaya this time first to go in Phuket ONLY to choose the right girl(s) that can follow me in Patong, i prefer a single girlfriend than changing everyday. I have longly evaluated to start with Cambodia beaches (Airasia tickets to Phnom Pen are really cheap now) but i'm not sure about this choice, do you have beaches/girls/nightlife photos to post?

"The Beach" was filmed in Koh Pee Pee Li.

Koh Samet is nice, but Phuket has some nicer beaches, not all, some.

Anyway this seems to be a troll thread. And thanks to all the contradicting recommendations here serious observers are now more confused than before.

Koh Samui :)

Weston-super-Mare

I'd go for that but only when the tide is in!! hah hah hah

Other attractions include:

  • The burnt out remains of the Grand Pier. See attached a glorious sight.
  • Joining in knocking old people over for their pension, specialist instruction by resident smack heads.
  • Chips.
  • Woolworths . . . oh wait . . .
  • Boy racers with cars that sound like tractors and speak "Ouim shaarrrpenin' moi petchfarck!"
  • Donkey rides.

How anyone would even consider Koh Pi Pi over WSM I have no idea?

neither.

I agree Neighter both are rip offs

Which brings me back to Weston-s-Mare as a superb family destination!

There was one of those holiday swap progs on in the UK where families take each other on hols. The poor family from Bristol always took the bus to WSM for a day . . . tear jerking sadness . . . whilst the family from Epsom went to BKK etc.

It was hilarious!

If you want to play golf, definitely Pattaya!! Golf in Phuket is 4-5 times more expensive. Also if you are into sailing, Pattaya is better (very little wind in Phuket, and if it blows it's during monsoons so it's very wet).

I live in Pattaya but travel to Phuket whenever I feel like a bit of surfing (May - Sep) and can't be bothered flying to Bali to catch a wave.
