Hi

We have been in Changmai for almost 3 months renting a great house on a moobaan.

What does everyone do here at night??

We go walking around the complex after 8pm and its like a ghost town - everyone is sleeping

Not like we are 20 somethings and party animals just want to stay up later than 10.00 clock without getting square eyes from too much TV!!

Are we 'abnormal'...

:)

Hi Mitzi,

You could always come to my place and see my etchings.....

Seriously, have to agree with you, dead as a dorr nail in the evenings if you aren't into football, cricket, golf or other such sleep inducing activities.

Anyone near hang Dong feel the same?

Hi Daveybaby

Thanks for the offer - are you awake after 8pm at night??

:)

Here's a few ideas....

1. Quiz night at one of the many pubs.

2. Sports - there are groups who run, play basketball, softball. rugby or volleyball in the evenings.

3. Huey Tung Tao - eat and walk or swim

or do what we've started doing....

Get up at 5:00-6:00am. 8:00pm then feels much later than what it should :)

We are in Hang Dong. usually go for a swim around 5 through to 6. Then water the garden ,and have dinner.Frankly apart from going to a restaurant there is nothing to do unless you like to sit outside and watch the stars. Well you cant do that in Bangkok . Perhaps someone with more energy than moi should considerrganising a night of mutual interests at a venue to be decided around the Hang Dong Area. We live in Banwangtan ,which is basically rural ,with one pleasant restaurant overlooking a lake but nothing else.

The days of wine, women and song in Chiang Mai have long gone.

To be quite honest, it seems like Chiang Mai has been shut down.

If you`re bored of temples, Internet, shopping at supermarkets, the Night Bazaar and a few water falls here and there, expensive Spas, old grannie massages, than there is not much else of interest.

If someone on here knows where all the fun is at, than let us all in on the secret?

What to do at night time in Chiang Mai:

Take a taxi to Chiang Mai airport and fly to Bangkok.

I still say that there is plenty of action out there for all but the most jaded.

I have been having dinner at Marco's on Loi Khoh Road on a regular basis and there are lots of girls flinging themselves at me as I walk past and some are quite comely. Also, there are all the fishbowl massage places, the naughty girls working in"traditional" massage places and breaking all the rules, the many karaoke palaces and bars and places like Spicy.

Sure Bangkok and Pattaya have even more action, but how much do you really need? :)

Of the people I know who have been tempted by larger, cheaper and more luxurious housing way out of town a significant number have waited out their leases and moved back nearer the centre of things. In town: live music most nights, quizzes, movies, restaurants bars et al. You have got to be OK with being pretty self reliant as far as entertainment goes out in the country.

Live music - quite a few places - ie UN Irish Pub has jazz upstairs every week - I think either Weds or Thurs nights. Also many entertainment venues on and around Niemenhaman Rd.

I'm not sure that the UN Irish is still doing the Wednesday evening Jazz gig. They'd stopped it last time I went. North Gate Jazz Co-Op has music every night though from 9.30 - 12.00 - Friday night second set nearly always great.

Right - I hadn't been there for a while. I posted the link to the thread re: live music in Chiang Mai. Had some good suggestions.

There is plenty to do at night. Take a walk or tuk tuk into town, meet friends, play pool, meet new people, go to a movie, bowling, have a bbq at home and invite people over, play cards, etc.

What did your home country/town have that you cannot find here and usually far closer? Lets not turn this into a good restaurant thread!!!

If you do like golf, then night time golf at Stardome is great fun and open to 11pm (last tee 7pm). I certainly couldnt go round a golf course at night floodlit with a buggy and beers in London.

Well if you find girls flinging themselves as you walk by their establishments on Loi Kroh Rd you must be some incredibly attractive guy but I am not sure that Mitzi's original post was looking for that sort of action. If you happen to live outside the Cities boundaries there is very little to do and who wants to drink and drive in company with some of the lunatics that frequent the roads at night.

I'm not in the least attractive. That is why I am saying things ain't all that bad. Actually, I am responding to sassienie's post and I'm pretty sure that we are both on the same "page" when it comes to nightlife. :)

There are a lot of people still going to the new Riverside to hear the music. Tuskers is a nice place to have a few beers. As far as social events there are some that happen. Keep your eyes open for events that happen at the Art Space at the back of Kad Suan Kao. Last weekend Buonissimo had a wine tasting on Friday, Saturday and then Sunday afternoon and then again yesterday, the 13th, at The Meridian. I can't remember what night it is but the North Gate Jazz Club goes off on one night a week and I think it's Saturday that The Guitarman has a good crowd. And there's always the movie theater.

I think the OP stated that home was on some desolate but comfortable Moo Ban somewhere out in Hang Dong. There's plenty to do here - it's coming into town to do it that's a pain in the neck. Most people underestimate the effort required to get off the sofa and trek into town, especially if you have to rely on a bike rather than a car at this time of year.

Sparkles, if you live outside the city boundaries in almost any country in the world there ain't much to do. Drink driving laws prohibit driving back home in almost all Western cultures these days. So what's different?

Actually, in New Zealand the locals find fun in the paddocks at night but that's another story.

Yea, but that`s all well and good, but I`ll get straight to the point, Where`s all the crumpet? Besides the usual rip off soapy massages and those dirty run down bars in the Loi Kroh road?

I`m sure many more wish to know this, but I`m the only one with guts enough to mention it.

Sass, for a while there you seemed to make a number of fairly sensible posts but it seems you've come off the rails of late.

Like I said earlier, have a look around but make sure your eyes are open.

Sawasdee Khrup, Khun UG,

I find you very attractive; in Kalimantan female orangs would go into oestrus at the sight of you, and swarm you.

And when you post things like "whip me, beat me" : well, that's just icing on your hunky cake.

Sorry but I don't get this at all. First, you lock yourself into some brain-dead housing estate [and there's NOTHING wrong with that, I did that myself], where the specific goal of living there is the peace & quiet, and then you complain about.... it being peaceful and quiet. Hellooo.. Also, how far is this out of town anyway? Sparkles mentioned Ban Wangtan, all of 10 minutes to Chiang Mai gate.

Why are we even discussing his.. in 10 minutes you're in town! Or if even downtown Chiang Mai is too quiet, there's plenty to choose from in SE Asia. I'd personally opt for Hong Kong, but even there chances are I'd live in a pretty breain-dead and quiet condominium!

:D:D:D:D:D:D Thanks UG best laff this week. Its true for about $20.00 the little ladies can make you feel like your back in high school. A few drinks, shoot some pool, meet some tourists have a good time. Anything else "up to you".

Plenty of our friendly Tuk-Tuks so no need to drive home.

Back to the OP, I can think of 5 good venues in CM for farang, The Riverside area, Loi Kroh area, Niminhieman (sp)area, and Night Bazaar area and anywhere around the moat is good fun.

CM town is where it is. If you live outside you must come into town. Get the mobile number of a good tuk-tuk driver to come and pick you up and for small money he is your Limo driver for the night. They will take you anywhere you want and get you home safe. Enjoy this town it has a lot to offer :D . Chok dee.

Err... Warm Up, Monkey Club - clunge central. Or if you like your girls ready to go, try Bang Saen.

It's pretty much been said already but you make your choice, live outside town for the quiet life or central for the night life as Blinky mentioned it's the same all over the world. The tuk tuk idea is always a good one. If I'm late out in town I give my local one a call and he's waiting outside my venue of choice as I finish my last beer wating to take me home. The other option is an early start and get the 10pm bus, which has it's moments.

Chiang Mai's problem isn't the lack of bars or restaurant's catering to Farangs, the problem is that there are to many.

I used to live out of town and I found it a little boring and, like you said, an effort to come to town. So I moved to town and even though I don't go out much it is still more convenient.

I do have a few friends that live outside of town and they have developed friendships and plan small parties and go out to dinners.

So to meet people there is the Chiang Mai Friends Group, The Expats Club, some Quiz Nights held at various bars and restaurants, The Ladies Lunch Bunch, The Gentleman's Club at The Pub (using the term loosely), the Dining Out Group, a few other clubs that get together at various locations around town, softball down near Chiang Mai Land on Sunday (I'm not sure if this is still going on.), some of the pubs and bars play sporting events, some groups of people get together to sing and there are a lot of charities and charity events if you are into that.

Hanging out at the bars will get you about the same kind of experience that you would expect at a bar in the west.

There is also a web site from CityLife called CityNow with local happenings, Chang Puak Magazine and Welcome To Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai also list local happenings and a few of the other magazines and papers have things to do.
