What Would You Restore In Thailand?

In the unlikely event that you were possibly bored with the latest Toyota/Honda duopoly offerings and wanted a car less common and mundane and yet under say THB 800,000, what older vehicle would you buy and restore/upgrade?

There are good mechanics/spray shops/upholsterers in Thailand at very reasonable prices, so it should be much cheaper than the west to bring something up to as new condition. That may even include a complete engine exchange for something easier to get repaired if in the sticks.

Some initial thoughts: Jaguar, MG, Lexus...

Thanks for your thoughts Blondie, sounds nice, actually thought there were more motor heads on the motor forum? Guess not, just excited about their unique Jazz or Dmax.

Friend bought an old Daimler and 928 Porche quite cheap and had them fully restored ay a reasonable price, thought it an intersting idea and just wanted some ideas on makes I hadn't thought of to do same. Another bought an old Mazda Capella that ended up nice. Seen Lexus IS200 under 800k (showed my girlfriend the pic and she thought it was a new exotic, as would most Thais), plus MGBs and the later shape MG cheap. Also some nice vintage cars around Chiang Mai. A Prelude at 350k, fun driving car if manual with sunroof.

I'll keep hunting.

Correct!

In Chiang Mai there is a wide choice of classic cars for sale, engine specialists, bodywork people, upholstery experts, you name it.

I recommend you look at the Classic Cars of Lanna website, and google something called autonostalgia.info

Sorry, don't know about Bangkok, but there are some good restoration folks in or near Pattaya.

PM me for more.

Theres a car yard just outside of bkk that has a lot of American cars and others just for this, I remember seeing someone post pics of them, I think the place sells them all for around 300k each.

Thanx, thats really helpful, outside Bangkok? Ok I know exactly where that is :) (No really could you specify?).

I saw a really great looking Chevrolet pick up today (seen it before too), in our neigborhood (Bkk, Rahm Intra Km2), might have been 40 years old... Thats what I want! As long as the body looks classic, I dont care soo much about the moving parts...

Looks like our posts hit about the same time.

My Thai neighbour here in CM has a smart early 60's stepside pick up for sale. Don't know the price and am unsure if it's a Chevy or a Dodge. But it's smart and registered and used every weekend.

Give me a few days and I'll fill in the blanks.......

As you head out to Suwannaphum from sukhumvit there’s a row of large restaurants on the left side beside the freeway. There are also a couple of housing estates nearby.

One of the restaurants has a lake in the middle. As you drive around the lake they have older cars in need of restoration parked in sheds. It may be worth inquiring. Sorry I can’t remember the restaurants name.

In Khon Kaen there are a couple of late 80s 500 SEC Benz coupes. Been pimped up though. I'd like one of them back to original spec. I always thought they were one of those most attractive Banz models. There's also a guy with a knackered late 60s/early 70s 450 SEL with the upright headlights. MY friend back home had a mint restored one with the 6.9 block in it. God I loved that car.

There are a number of cars in Khon Kaen from my youth that would have been in the scrap yard eons ago back home.

Mk1 and 2 Ford Capris, Cortinas and Escorts and a couple of Austin A40s. The first car I can remember my dad having.

If you are looking for an old American car they are around. The Bangkok Thai American Car Club has a classified section on their website (in Thai) and there are many cars and trucks for sale. To view most of the photos on the threads you need to register (it's free) for the site. I bought my 1965 Oldsmobile off the site about 6 months ago. So far I have 325,000 baht in the car so you can find bargains out there. IF someone is really interested in getting an American classic car please PM me. Here is their website address, http://www.thaiamericancarclub.com/ Their website is under maintenance this weekend (Aug. 26 & 27). Also, here are a few pics of my ride.

I have had restored a 1967 VW Kombi and also a 1961 VW Karman Ghia convertible here in Phuket, although most of the significant body work was done in Bangkok. My local VW guy here coordinated the whole thing. It has taken a while but the results are good and the price is right - I can always get more than I spent, which is reassuring.

American muscle cars are what I like. My heart wants a 66 Corvette convertible, but my head is saying buy a 2005 Cadillac STS!

Love the muscle cars too, but there is not much choice in LOS. Got 2 Olds cutlass, one is a 74, 4 door Saloon and the other one is a 81 Cutlass Supreme, Coupe. Of corse, would prefere a 69' GTO, or someting similar, but not overhere. There is nothing available. The place near Bangkok, call 'Narong'. He still have some US Cars left, but from 400'k upwards. Expensive for a "Project car"! As i said, mosthly is only Junk available for a couple hundert thousend Baht.

There is a 73' continental for sale in Puked, for about 650'k. Bought a 56 Belair 2 door in Phuket. You have to look arround, but it's very hard to find something useful overhere.

Rodkit, i have now the same engine in one of my olds, but take the Toyota badge out and nobody regonize this engine. I done the same, and noone know.

BTW, your car looks great, interesting is to see the chrome plastic cover on the side of your front seats. My olds is almost 20 years younger than yours, but still have the same plastic covers over 2 decades. Just made them by stainless steel (laser cut) as one of them was broken.

Lexus IS200 for 800k are you sure? I don't think that's correct, even for the earliest of the ISs, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Daimler, yes that would be cool. I dunno if Thailand imported them, but what about one of those old V12 Jags? That would be nice also.

The 928 Porsche... only if manual transmission...

How about a Land Rover Defender or an old Jeep? Something you can take out in the country, beat up a bit, explore... that would be my choice...

The Prelude mentioned, which version, with the flip-up lights and the 4-wheel steering? If manual transmission, I think that would be a fun car to drive, especially on the winding mountain roads up north...

edit: Rdrokit - no B-pillars, that's just sweet! :) I have a friend here in BKK who has restored an old Impala... he went all out, hydraulic suspension, etc... nice ride - but the thing is HUGGGEEEEEE.....

Actually a few IS200 on one2car.com for 8/900k. Great site also for many brands of car, was looking at Jags and MG on there too.

Personal choice, Jaguar :D

You're correct JUDAS, my mistake. Dang I didn't know the IS came out way back in the late 90's... time flies!!!

I say Jaguar also, for restoration project... Lexus is just too new of a brand - the word 'restoration' really doesn't fit!

Something like this, perhaps:

http://one2car.com/CarInfor/cardetails.asp...90206&row=2

but in a drop-top... now that would be nice....

edit: Or perhaps this:

torque..... :D

It looks nice Rdrokit. What possessed you to put a 2UZ in it?

When I bought it it had a 1JZ turbo in it but I wanted a V-8. There were no American V-8s available at a decent price so I put a Lexus V-8 in it which my mechanic got for me at a good price. Now when I get on it it sounds like a V-8 and I can't tell the difference between an American V-8 or the Jap V-8.

Just a thought: I came up behind the most luscious Italian classic coupe this week, sans rear bumpers. Must have been an early VW Karmann Ghia.

When did they move Germany to Italy? :) I really must keep up on the news -- a little embarassing to miss big stories like that one.

But to answer the question, I'd like to get my hands on an early 70's Toyota Celica coupe. It may not seem terribly exciting to most people, but there's something about those cars that I've always liked.

Beacher, Take a look at this 67 Toyota Trueno. Almost like a Celica. It's got a late model 4A-GE 1600cc dual overhead cam motor. Like the minilite mag wheels.
