Celebrations for HM the King's 82nd birthday

Thais can now declare their intention to do good deeds on behalf of their beloved King at the government's homepage, www.thaigov.go.th.

"Sign your name there. Then, we will compile a list of the names and present it to His Majesty," PM's acting secretarygeneral Anchalee Wanich Theppabut said yesterday.

People and organisations across the country are busy preparing to celebrate His Majesty the King's birthday on Saturday, when he turns 82.

A wide variety of activities are scheduled for this month, including at night.

For example, the 4D Visual Light and Sound Show about the revered monarch will be held on a stage in the Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall daily at 7pm from December 513.

A stretch of Rajdamnoen Avenue will be filled with musical performances and multimedia shows from 6pm to midnight starting today until Monday.

"We will also stage various performances at the National Theatre in Bangkok," said Weera Rojpojanarat, permanent secretary of the Culture Ministry.

The public is welcome to watch the performances.

About 600 members of minority groups from Chiang Mai, Phayao and Kamphaeng Phet are planning to travel to Bangkok to express their loyalty to His Majesty during his birthday celebrations, he said.

This is in addition to all the children and youths joining similar trips organised by agencies working with the ministry.

As hundreds of thousands of people are expected to turn out for the grand celebrations, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration checked 124 security cameras under its control.

"We will ensure that all the cameras in our closedcircuit television system are in good working order. The cameras will allow swift operations in case of any incident," Deputy Bangkok Governor Thirachon Manomaipiboon said.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Maj General Panu Kerdlarpphol advised motorists to check www.trafficpolice.go.th or call 1197 to inquire about traffic routes in the inner city from December 113.

"Many roads will be closed for the celebrations," he said.

The Thai Pheung Thai Foundation said it would provide free operations to 600 heartdisease patients and 600 cataract sufferers and free radiotherapy to 600 cancer patients in honour of Their Majesties the King and the Queen.
