Annual Thai-US military exercise begins

CHIANG MAI: -- Thailand and the US have officially begun their annual joint military exercise at an army base in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

This year’s Cobra Gold 05 exercise involves 108 Thai military men and 21 American soldiers, Lt. Col. Adul Chanma, commander of the 1st Special Battalion in Mae Rim district, told TNA.

The two-week-joint military training exercise which started on Monday will focus on technical combat skills, inside buildings and in ambush scenarios. The exercise will be restricted to a base of the Fifth Special Battalion Division and surrounding areas.

''Our personnel will learn combat skills against terrorism and techniques in handling urban unrest, which are currently our main tasks”, said Lt. Col. Adul.

Cobra Gold is an annually scheduled joint military exercise between the US and Thailand aimed to ensure regional peace. It is also designed to help strengthen the Thai army's ability to defend its territory and to respond to regional contingencies.

Even though there are over 6,000 participating troops, it's less than half of the 13,000 plus that took part last year and years past. Department of Defense said it was because of the military is already seriously strained with forces in Afghanistan, Iraq, and all over the world. They simply don't have the available troops to fully participate.
