Western region primed for landslides

BANGKOK: -- Government geologists today warned residents of Thailand’s western region to be on the lookout for landslides over the next few days as heavy thunderstorms and torrential rain hit the area.

The Department of Mineral Resources has identified the provinces of Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Lamphoon, Tak, Kamphaengphet, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Petchaburi, Prachuab Khiri Khan, Ranong, Phang-nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun as being particularly at risk.

With heavy rain projected for over 80 percent of the region, the risk of landslides and flash floods is high, particularly in mountainous areas. The full list of villages thought to be at risk can be found on the website www.dmr.go.th.
