JKaterenchuk
Is there anyway in Thailand to get a USA iPhone modified to be the equivalent of a factory unlocked iPhone purchased in Thailand? I am not interested in information about firmware unlocks as that is readily available online. If so any recommendation on tech's and prices? nikster
There's two kinds of iPhones. Factory unlocked. And not factory unlocked (SIM locked to a local carrier, wherever you bought it). There is no way in software to make one like the other. The SIM locked ones can be jailbroken and if they don't have the latest baseband, they can be unlocked. But it's not the same as factory unlock. A factory unlocked phone remains unlocked throughout Apple firmware and baseband upgrades, a SIM locked one will re-lock every time you upgrade. I was actually wondering - there is apparently a magic cookie Apple can send to a locked phone to make it factory unlocked. However, this mechanism has not yet been reverse-engineered or simulated by anyone. We know this exists since some carriers in Australia sell the iPhone locked, but allow users to have them unlocked (officially!) after a certain period of time, or after paying a fee. These officially unlocked (by Apple) phones then remain unlocked just like factory unlocked ones. Why nobody has hacked the process I don't know - it seems like it would be the ultimate solution. motoyen
What's the difference between the factory unlocked phones and the hacker unlocked phones? Is it hardware or software? If it's software why can't the hacker community put the factory unlocked software on the locked phones to make them factory unlocked? A better question is why the hel_l doesn't Apple ditch AT&T and just start selling factory unlocked phones like the Nexus One? AT&T must be paying Apple a fortune to keep them from jumping to a better carrier.
