Canadian Passport Renewal In Thailand

Recommended Posts

Hi

I find myself in a position that I will need to renew my Canadian Passport while staying in Thialand. I have spent time looking at the Canadian Emabassy website and Passport Canada. Because I have been moving around in Thialand and not planning on going back to Canada .... I want to renew the passport in Thialand. I will not have a guarantor based on their definition. I see that I can use a process to have a recognized person take the place of a guarantor. By completing a form PPTC132 and having that person sign the form.

Question: Does anybody know the process here in Bangkok? Who is the person signing the form? How easy is the process? Do I just show up with the forms at the embassy and they have a person or people that take the statements and sign off on the form? How much does this service cost?

Is the new passport made in Thialand or is it made in Canada and sent to thialand?

I have sent the Embassy 3 emails and they have all been returned to me undeliverable. So I thought there maybe some fellow canadians here that have used this route.

Thanks for the help ... cheers

Just show up at the embassy and say you dont have guarantor.

You will fill out the form where inlieu of a guarantor you state who you are (plus what ever documents you need) then they will have a notary public have you read the form and done.

You pay extra, I forgot how much. (did mine 2 yrs ago)

You wait 1-2weeks then collect your new passport. It comes from Canada, but will say issued in BKK.

Quite painless actually, infact a more pleasnt experience then back home in Toronto.

I renewed my Cad passport last year in BKK. It was an easy process. I was living in Phuket at the time and they instructed me to bring all the documents to BKK, and then I could choose to have new passport sent by courier back to Phuket. Not the safest way to have a new passport returned but it is allowed if you choose.

The guarantor option can be done in their office but you will have to have birth certificate, and other pieces of id with you to confirm your identity. I used a Birth certificate, a Thai drivers license and my SIN Card. They will sign your guarantor paper if you supply them with enough id. Best to check with them if you ever get through on email or maybe call them. They were super friendly to me when calling and emailing.

The cost depends on the amount of pages. 24 or 48 pages were the options. I chose the 48 pages for $105 CAD.

Good luck

I had to do mine a couple of years ago. Even found someone attending the office who was a Commissioner of Oaths back home. We filled out the form, but the embassy staff were horrified. They wouldn't get their piece!

So I had to go through the forms with someone there, pay them to witness them as my in lieu of guarantor.

Sorry, I can't remember how much it all cost me.

They did manage to send everything to Ottawa electronically. But the passport is issued in Bangkok.

Despite being over the Xmas/New Year's period, it only took about a week or ten days, if I recall correctly.

Relatively painless, except for some of the costs! :):D

Same here...

It's quite easy and painless (except the fees). The building is easy to find, waiting time is relatively short. You get your passport Made In Canada in a couple of weeks (and as said, marked as "Issued in Bangkok"). It's machine readable, unlike the previous on that I had 6 years ago.

The link to the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok webpage is: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/thail...x.aspx?lang=eng

More passport specific: http://www.voyage.gc.ca/faq/passports_passeports-eng.asp

And the forms: http://www.pptc.gc.ca/form/index.aspx?lang=eng (be careful, there are different versions depending if you live abroad or not - check all the sections).

Have fun!

Thank you all for the help and information. This takes a load off of my mind. I had visions of disaster! Good to know there are several Canadians here in Thailand. I have been here for 1 and 1/2 years and not yet meet another Canadian. Thanks again ... cheers

I just renewed my son's passport last month.

It now takes 3 weeks to process.

If you don't have a guarantor you need to fill out an additional form "Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor" and they now require 4 references (with addresses and phone numbers). Previously the requirement was 2, the change was effective just this month, i saw the notice when I went to pick up the finished passport. And it seems now they are much more strict - they even called up my boss and landlord (the 2 references I supplied) and asked them what do I look like ? what am I doing in Thailand ? how long have you known him ? Is he married ? etc. ). This in spite of the fact I have had 3 previous passports issued through the Bangkok office, and my son has had 2 previous passports.

So you'd better go pick up the forms yourself and find out for sure ! Embassy is located in Abdul Rahim Place building (15th floor) on Rama IV road opposite Lumpini Park. Go early (8am), they start work at 8:30 and there's usually a queue by then

  • 1 year later...

I have to renew my Canadian passport in the next couple of months... reading the previous post here has brought some relief of mind, that it will be easier than I imagined.... although it's a bit over a year since the last post.....

Anyone done this more recently and are there any new "bureaucratic" changes ?

What about the passport photos, do they need to be "certified" when taken?

Does one have to physically make two trips to BKK... one to apply and then to pickup.... ? Or can the new passport be sent through Thailand Post/ Courier?

The thought of two trips to BKK is quite daunting! :o not to mention the extra cost involved! :(

Any positive comments would be appreciated..Thx.:jap:

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm surprised that the emails came back because I've found the Canadian embassy here to be very good at responding to emails. Like the others have said, just go down there and get the necessary forms. I've gone through 3 passports while in Thailand and have always found the staff at the Canadian embassy to be top notch.
