Sex, drugs, fights welcome new students

BANGKOK: University initiation parties are notorious for alcohol and drug abuse, sexual harassment and other forms of violence, according to a poll about freshmen and seniors taken at nine public universities in Bangkok.

Forty-six per cent of the 1,487 university students interviewed in the Abac poll said they had witnessed the use of alcohol at freshmen parties, while 42 per cent said they had taken part in the drinking themselves. About nine per cent said they saw seniors introduce freshmen to cigarettes.

Other students admitted seniors encouraged freshmen to sexually harass fellow partygoers, become involved in dangerous activities, use drugs and indulge in sexual practices.

“It’s very troubling that 88 per cent of the respondents who said they had joined in also admitted that they did so willingly,” said Srisak Jamornmarn, chairman of Assumption University’s Abac Poll Research Centre.

Ninety-five per cent of university students said their faculties held the initiation events. More than half believed the Engineering Faculty at each university had the most violent events, the survey said.

Eighteen per cent of respondents said freshmen parties encouraged conflict, such as quarrelling with seniors, an inability to associate with friends and inspired them to become apathetic about their studies.

Supakorn Buasai, manager of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, said that 18 per cent was a worrying figure because it means as many as 10,000 freshmen each year are developing problems triggered by the events.

“These parties have been found to affect numerous freshmen, even leading them to alcohol and nicotine addiction, and possibly luring them to other anti-social activities,” Srisak said.

Supakorn said other research had found that 80 per cent of today’s habitual smokers started smoking before 20 years of age, or university age.

Noppadol Sinpisut, a third-year student at the Suan Sunandha Rajabhat university and coordinator of the NONA (No Nicotine and Alcohol for Better Life Group), said that the group had been developing a non-alcoholic drink called the “Alternative Drink” which tastes and smells like alcohol. It is hoped that the Alternative Drink could replace alcohol at the initiation events.

He said the NONA also has a plan to create a camp for leading seniors to change their attitudes about the freshmen party.

“We want them to understand that without alcohol, violence and associated bad behaviour, seniors can create a good impression and unity among freshmen,” he said.

Anon Wanla, president of the student club at Mahidol University, said the club had campaigned for anti-alcohol freshmen parties and wants to teach seniors about the real objective of the initiation events, which is to welcome others.

“Nowadays, the initiation events seem to have developed into a process of retaliation where seniors want to get revenge for what they had done to them in previous years. We have to make them realise that this is not what an initiation event should be about,” he said.

So... Thai University initiation rites sound just like western University initiation rites... same same but different? :D

And surprise surprise... Thai Universities have goody-goody student groups that want to ban alcohol too... :D

Who says Thailand is so different from the rest of the world? :o

Somchai Readsalottaporn, a third-year student at the Sriracha Institute and coordinator of MING (More Insane Nonsense Group), said that the group had developed a blow-up doll called "Alternative Human" which felt and looked just like a freshman woman. It is hoped the Alternative Human could replace the real humans that suffer sexual groping at the initiation events.

Somchai Readsalottaporn has confided in me that sales are brisk...

but not from the targeted consumer group of university students. It seems most of his orders are coming from down the highway in Pattaya.

If there is one city that does not need blow up women, it's Pattaya. If all the old, fat, bald, tattooed slobs that populate Pattaya can find 'love' in hundreds of places, who needs a blow up doll? Probably why so many of us like it! :o:D

I had one of those inflatable 'alternative women' once.  It was going really well until her inflatable boyfriend turned up & kicked **** out of me! :D  :D

So did I. I gave mine a lovebite, she farted, then flew away!!

What if someone pefers the palstic to the flesh? Isn't something like this just helping the innocent Thai youngsters give in to amorle western behavior? :o

If doing it to yourself causes blindness and hairy hands, what does the plastic do?

Those poor college kids! :D

If you want 'em to be. :D Sriracha John (aka Somchai R'porn) didn't specify man or woman for his "Alternative Human", although "she" feels and looks like the real thing. Ask John, Somchai or Cliff Richard for directions to the Sriracha Institute of Swingers Freshy Party for test drives of "AH". :o

say, I'm not the same guy as Somchai Readsalottaporn. :D He tells me his MING group is thriving on sales to Pattaya. Apparently they are popular in the beer bars where the clientele much prefer their non-speaking abilities.

The Sriracha Institute of Nubile Young Babes in Sexy Black and White Uniforms is located near a 7-11. Should be easy to find.
