Coming to Bangkok soon for a few months been learning Muay Thai in the Uk twice a week for fitness recreational nothing competitive. Want to get more involved and take it more serious. But dont know were to start looking does anyone have any recomendations of gyms

Don't know about Bangkok but Pattaya has Tony's Gym (third road) which has a Muay Thai training centre. Not sure if that's of any use or not?

not sure to be honest. all the places i found when i was looking for somewhere to train were of the 'let's charge bullshit prices for bullshit lessons given by two-bob instructors' variety (ie target the corporate/women self defence market and not the actual fighting one)

you would be better off in a thai gym, good luck in finding one!

The search for a good boxing gym can be tricky for first time visitors. I have some experience in this field so perhaps I can help.

To my knowledge there are no formal certificates issued to most Thai Boxing coaches so it's not always easy to find somebody who can really teach you the techniques. As with many things in Thailand, word of mouth is the best way to go and this is regardless of how elaborate or simple the training facility is. Many places charge outrageous prices while some are much more reasonable. If you're looking to get accomodation the prices will be higher than if you just trained there.

Many of the upscale places like Fairtex in Samutprakan (next to Bangkok), Kaewsamrit (also in Bangkok) are expensive but will have instructors who can speak some English, good accomodation and plus you may get some discounted ticket prices at the major boxing stadiums should you wish to catch some live matches. On the other end of the scale you have the run-of-the mill boxing camps which take on young, Thai boys and train them for competition. These facilities are often old and not the cleanest of places, but you can train at them for far less than at the aforementioned places and you can also see how most Thai boxers train/live. Unfortunately, English is not a luxury you'll have at the average boxing camp so unless you know some Thai or unless you're prepared for the language barrier, you may get frustrated trying to communicate with the coaches/boxers. The good thing about Muay Thai is that most of what you need to do can be shown to you which places less importance on communicating with words. Part of the life here in Thailand is centered around bargaining so if you train at a local camp (and many have never had foreigners train there) you'll need to bargain for the training fees.

If you're serious about competing then you'll need to take even more care when selecting a training facility than if you're doing it for fun. One of my Muay Thai books suggests going for a short stay (up to a month) at one of the high end places like Fairtex to get your feet wet. After having trained there for a while and after having made some contacts, you can then branch out using your knowledge/contacts to find a cheaper (and perhaps closer) training camp. Keep in mind that boxing matches are great places to meet contacts as well.

Check out this site: www.muaythai2000.net Click on the English icon and go to "Muay Thai Camps In Thailand". Simply select the area you want and go from there. Many of the addresses/numbers are not correct but many are fine. If you can, find a Thai person to help you make some phone calls then perhaps you can save yourself some headaches/time instead of running around to all of them. There are TONS and I mean TONS of boxing camps in Thailand ranging from tiny, simple places underneath somebody's house to big, elaborate training places with swimming pools, saunas, the whole nine yards. Try a few places before making a choice. You'll learn something new everywhere you go. Good luck!

Leftcross...Go to "Muay Thai Camps In Thailand" on www.muaythai2000.net Click on "Central Part" and look under the "Bangkok" (number 14) section. It should list about 250 different boxing camps. Scroll down till you find a guy named Win Panyaprichote. Win is a buddy of mine from Ramkamhaeng University who is a Western stylist by trade. He trains people right there at the university and also at another location downtown (can't remember the name). Win's English isn't great but he can speak enough to get you by plus he specializes in Western Boxing. He has students who fight fairly often around Bangkok at different malls so if you're interested in competing he's the guy to talk to. Good luck!

Best bet is get out of bangkok the gyms have the quality but also have the pollution. There are gyms all over Thailand, find out what area suits your lifestyle then look for your gym. Best a luck.

I think they should be charging around 12,000-15000baht/month

(Depand on your level, for both Muaythai and American boxing)

But if they see you are realy talented, you get to stay and train

there for free and they get their money from % profit generated

from your fighting in the ring
