Govt on High alert Ahead of Coup Anniversary

BANGKOK: -- The prime minister admits the security situation remains worrisome, especially during a red-shirt rally planned for September 19, the 4th anniversary of the 2006 coup.

He has ordered security agencies to keep a close watch on some groups who do not want to see national reconciliation.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has ordered security tightened from now until September 19, the 4th anniversary of the 2006 coup.

Security agencies have been ordered to keep a close watch on the situation.

Abhisit believes there are some groups who do not wish to see reconciliation take place and are aiming to create public turmoil for political gains.

On the resignation of Yongyuth Wichaidit as Pheu Thai Party leader, Abhisit said this is not uncommon and it is Pheu Thai's internal affair.

The prime minister said he welcomes a Pheu Thai leadership change if it helps promote national reconciliation.

He said it does not matter who will be the new party leader as long the executives can work together.

Meanwhile, chairman of Pheu Thai MPs, Chalerm Yoobamrung, reiterated that his party supports the reconciliation plan.

However, Chalerm said the government must bring criminal charges against Pheu Thai members involved in the anti-monarchy movement if there is sufficient evidence.

He also demanded the government clarify accusations made against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra so that the reconciliation process can move forward.

Chalerm reaffirmed that he and the Pheu Thai Party are always loyal to the Monarchy.

Army Reinforces Troops on Security Watch

The army has deployed more troops to help the police strengthen its watch on the current situation after several bomb attacks over the past few months.

Army chief General Anupong Paochinda said soldiers will be deployed to support surveillance under the supervision of the police as suggested by security agencies.

Anupong asked the people to help monitor their surroundings as the recent violent incidents have affected their livelihood and the economy.

The general cautioned the red-shirt group to abide by the law in carrying out its activities next week to mark the fourth anniversary of the September 19 coup.

The army chief insisted he is ready to be held responsible if his subordinates were found to have killed red-shirt demonstrators while breaking up red-shirt protests in April and May.

He denied failure of the proposed reconciliation between the government and the opposition Pheu Thai Party was from the army's disapproval.

He suggested national unity can be restored through cooperation from all parties but there must not be chaos in the country.

Anupong also said he is not worried about being targeted for an assassination.

Heaven forbid - this mob seem to find things to worry them on an almost daily basis. Grow up, boys.

Next headline from The Nation's Propaganda & Rumour-mongering Department:

Sun banned from shining in Thailand as Cabinet Fear Own Shadows.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get you.
