Pattaya_Fox Posted July 30, 2005 Share Posted July 30, 2005 Surprise Meeting in Sattahip on plans for a Casino here in Pattaya. At the Sea Sand Sun Resort in Sattahip, Khun Sontaya, Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister chaired this surprise meeting to discuss plans for a Casino to be built here in Pattaya. The issue has been ongoing for many years and would require a change in the law to permit gambling. Also in attendance wre Khun Pisit, the Governor of Chonburi and Khun Sangar, Member of Parliament for Chonburi Province along with many other senior provincial and local government officials who are backing the plans. It was announced that a Casino in Pattaya would be good for tourism and would have many other indirect benefits including extra revenue from the increase in Tourists and an increase in house prices as people would choose to locate themselves near any Casino that was built. The idea is supported by top government officials and will now be represented to Central Government in a bid to open Thailand`s first legal Casino here in Pattaya. In my experience, Asians are even more prone to gambling addiction, at a dangerous level, than Americans. I love to "gamble". I put that in quotes because I define gambling, in the truest sense, as risking something that would hurt you if you lose it. I don't do that. I gamble constantly on American football. I go to casinos here in the USA. I play the California Lottery regularly. But I always have a designated amount that I will bet, and I never go beyond it. I actually view it as an "entertainment expense", and enjoy the excitement of knowing that I "might" actually win something! But I have never risked money to the extent that I'd be unable to pay my mortgage, pay my other creditors, or feed my family. That is reaching the "dangerous addiction" stage, as I define it. I believe that many Thais are subject to stepping over that line. While I favor legalized gambling (and drugs, for that matter), based upon the philosophy that people have the right to do what they want, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, I do fear that legalization of gambling in Thailand would seriously hurt the poor. I believe that they would consistently take risks that would cause severe hardship for their families. Strange contradiction for me, personally. I favor legalization, on a philosophical level, but fear it on a realistic level. GR (P.S. - My only drug is alcohol. Slightly more than doctors would approve of, but not to a point of regular drunkeness. But I believe that legalization of drugs such as marijuana and cocaine would significantly reduce serious crime in the world. - Ahh, but that's a subject for a whole thread of its own!) And if they want to go to the casino, they just go to Myanmar border or Cambodian border, or down to Genteng in Malaysia. Soon they can choose Singapore as another gambling destination. Or hop on the Air Asia gambler's express plane to Macau. All I'm saying that Thais gamble all the time in Thailand, just not in a legal casino right now. As far as I understand the Casino is planned for Jomtien, a whole different scene than Pattaya city, right now. It's not going to make all of Pattaya expensive, for those of you who are worrying. Debt from illegal gambling is not restricted to any one area. Thai's can place a bet on almost anything. From sport, to the closing numbers on the stock exchange, or simply a game of cards. However these bigger fish think nothing of flying or driving their BMW's to the Cambodian border every night/weekend to play the tables in Poipet. Casino's there which are incidentally 95% Thai owned. Its my opinion that casinoes will open very soon somewhere in Thailand in the next two years. Already passed by the House of Representatives, and with Singapore ( Singapore, a country Thaskin follows by example) having just declared its proposal to build casino's in its country, well..I would'nt bet against it now. Malaysians are not allowed topatronise the casinos in Malaysia, only work there. And still there are plenty of scam artists - i have been approached on several trips to KL to participate in a 'sure-fire' method of defrauding the casino. Usually by someone who purports to be a dealer or pit boss. But usually the object is to scam the mark, rather than the casino. And the Thais will go for such schemes with great gusto. Many will be the tales taken back about corrupt casino employees and so on. It will not do much for the Eastern Coast - the casino operators will be Toxin's Bangkok cronies, although hopefully the employees will be local. Personally I cannot see much good coming from a casino. I suppose the attitude of many Thais would be that the quicker they get the tourists money the quicker they will leave. The Ambassador hotel was interested in a casino being built in or on it?s premises. ( any Hotel would love that one) good luck to them if they ever got it. But i?m sure all those that have been here more that 5 minutes know that. Unlike the people who spout off from there pc in the Us or Uk. People well in the know im sure ( Not a direct go at you). As for Toxic being the major share holder in this establishment I dont know, can someone confirm this, (please no hearsay). or is it more speculation that fact!!! After all rumors are just that.
