Ricardo
We ate this evening at a new German/Thai restaurant, which is just opening-up, on Route-1001 (Chiang Mai to Phrao) about a kilometer south of Mae-Jo University, and on the LH-side of the road (as you come out from CM) opposite Wawee Coffee. I had spotted a chalk-board sign last week, now the big sign is up, for Heidelberg Restaurant which offers tasty German food, plus a Thai menu too. We had 4 main-dishes, a starter of cheesy garlic-bread & an extra portion of fried-potatoes plus soft-drinks, for 1,030 Baht. There are six outdoor (under-cover) tables, plus four more inside, and the menu is being rolled-out over the next week or two, as they build-up. It's run by 'Gypsy', and his wife Kantana who comes from just outside Mae-Jo, and who will be known to many TV-posters in Chiang Mai as the former owner of Rose Guesthouse in the centre of town, which he ran for several years before ill-health forced him to take a break. His popular fish-and-chips are definitely on the new menu ! One can only wish him success, as local expats in the Mae-Jo area need a wider range, than is currently available locally ! Gonzo the Face
Great to hear that you are still in there kicking butts, Gypsy. You are a CM institution. Wishing you all the best in the new business venture and in health.... G
Ricardo
I gather Gypsy plans to start a Sunday-buffet from this week-end, although it's obviously helpful to book, so that he has some idea of numbers while Heidelberg-restaurant is in its start-up weeks. Ricardo
We enjoyed our Sunday-buffet last week, menu & price vary each week so check with them for details of the next one, and Gypsy says he's now adding 'Corned-Beef Hash' to the menu, sounds good ! noise
So this is where it is on the west side of Hwy 1001 (see longitude and latitude on the map)? Just drove by there one more time without seeing it.
julesdick
So this is where it is on the west side of Hwy 1001 (see longitude and latitude on the map)? Just drove by there one more time without seeing it. Looks about right. Its got a big sign above it but which is maybe hard to spot with your eyes on the road. As I recall as you're heading North, its in a row of shops just before you get to the entrance of "Sign Apartment"
Ricardo
Yes, that map looks about right, it's perhaps 0.5km north of the PTT (on left as you come out from Chiang Mai) and 0.5km south of the Esso petrol-station. It's in the middle of a row of several shop-houses, and Waree-Coffee is 30m further north, on the other side of the road..
Ricardo
With a group of friends we enjoyed a leisurely lunch-buffet with Gypsy yesterday, B240/head for BBQ-sausages & pork-steaks & chicken-legs plus salads & fruit, I'd also recommend his wife's Indian-style chicken/potato-curry ! Gypsy was saying that he'll be opening earlier (from 9am) in future, to offer Full-English or 'Strammer-Max' or American-breakfasts, plus Corned-Beef Hash & Khao-Thom, with coffee/tea and O.J. Hope he gets support, as it's really useful to have farang-food here in Mae-Jo, rather than having to trek into town.
Ricardo
Sadly Heidelberg near Mae-Jo has now closed, upon expiry of the lease, but the good news is that Gypsy hopes to re-open back in town, somewhere near the Rose Guest-House, which he used to run & where he is better-known. :jap:
