News_Editor
Swiss vote to keep guns at home 2011-02-14 01:46:32 GMT+7 (ICT) GENEVA (BNO NEWS) -- An estimated 56.3 percent of Swiss voters on Sunday rejected a controversial proposal on tightening the country's liberal gun laws in a nationwide ballot, the Tribune de Genève newspaper reported. More than 1.395 million people voted against the initiative which sought to ban army-issue guns from the home. Support came from mainly urban regions including Geneva, Basel and Zurich, while opposition was strongest in rural areas.
The result is a blow to gun-control groups and supporters, while the government and the majority in Parliament welcomed the results saying that the current legislation is sufficient to protect the public against misuse. The initiative was launched four years ago in an attempt to propose tighter controls on gun ownership and reduce the number of suicides and incidents of domestic violence. The goal was to remove 1.7 million military weapons from circulation to reduce suicides and murders. Switzerland has one of the world's most liberal gun license laws. The country's 8 million people own an estimated 2.5 million guns, with 1.2 million of them from the military. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-02-

coma
Yes. Good get up for the swiss. A great deterant for anybody thinking about conducting any sort of criminal behaviour inside somebody else's house. Maybe all these mass shootings and murders that one reads on almost a daily basis around the globe would be reduced if we level the playing field a little and allow Joe Citizen, not just allow criminals and Scitzo people [admittingly most access them illegally], have access to these types of firearms. One, no one was allowed to take weapons in the bar. The other everyone had an automatic rifle and some pistols, occasionally a machine gun. Had fights in the bar without weapons. No fights in the bar with weapons. My answer. Mandatory military service for all citizens, weapons training and let everyone take their gun home. Kind of like the Swiss. Who cares if someone wants to off himself? Teach people safe and secure handling of firearms. Get the guns out of the hands of crooks and into the hands of honest citizens.
