Pheu Thai: No Objections To Yingluck Nomination

But that doesn't remove the fact she will be her brothers proxy and puppet and makes it a non-starter. If he was not in the picture, definitively, she might be quite good for PTP. But that is all conjecture and wishful thinking.

We already had two Thaksin proxies, the late k. Samak and k. Thaksin's brother-in-law k. Somchai. Mostly remembered for leading a government with main aim 'get back Thaksin'. Remembered by some only, it seems :ermm:

That's ok, anyone not remembering are reminded by the forthcoming Defence Minister, that there will be absolutely no change in the focus by Thaksin-Proxy, version 3.0

Former Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces (appointed by his cousin, Thaksin) General Chaisit Shinawatra

He indicated that his cousin, Thaksin, will be the one to choose the Pheu Thai Party candidate for the position of PM.

He goes on to say that Thaksin will only return to Thailand when he is positive that he will not have to serve any of his adjudicated prison time.

If the PTP were to win, they will seek avenues to exonerate him from that sentence.

Thaksin will only return if granted amnesty: Chaiyasit

Fugitive former PM Thaksin Shinawatra would return to Thailand only if he were exempted from serving time in jail, his cousin retired General Chaiyasit Shinawatra said yesterday.

Chaiyasit added that the opposition Pheu Thai Party would seek royal amnesty for Thaksin if it won the upcoming general elections. "He will only return home if he does not have to serve the jail sentence," he reiterated.

The retired general also expressed confidence in peace returning to the country if Thaksin were able to come home, adding that the former PM would not demand that his seized assets be given back.

Chaiyasit served as Army Chief and then Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces during Thaksin's reign.

In October 2008, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders sentenced Thaksin in absentia to two years in jail for conflict of interest. The case was related to Thaksin's wife Pojaman winning the bid to buy coveted land plots from a government agency while her husband was in power.

Last February, the Supreme Court ordered the seizure of Bt46 billion in Thaksin's family's assets because they were earned dishonestly while he was premier.

Chaiyasit said yesterday that Thaksin would personally pick Pheu Thai's prime ministerial candidate, adding that the person would most probably be someone from the Shinawatra family.

He reckoned that Thaksin's sister Yingluck was "qualified and ready" to become the candidate.

Meanwhile, the ruling Democrat Party said yesterday that the upcoming election would be a two-party contest and a battle between Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and Pheu Thai's prime ministerial candidate.

"Thaksin is not related to the election. He is just part of the red shirts' political campaign outside Parliament," Democrat spokesman Buranaj Smutharaks said.

However, Buranaj said the Democrats were concerned that Pheu Thai was trying to win the state power in order to "solve the problems of one person" - the self-exiled former PM Thaksin.

Buranaj added that on Wednesday the party would announce its policy platforms for the upcoming general elections, including ones aimed at increasing people's income and reducing the cost of living.

We should all appreciate Chayasit announcing PTP's platform early so no one has to wait until April 23 to see what their plans are.

yes - and I am banning myself from political comment before the election and let the elections and Thai people speak for themselves - I hope there is a fair and peaceful outcome

For sure...let's hope it is peaceful. Fair...no way...too much vote buying.

The other paper is saying PM Nominee-in waiting Yingluck is traveling to Russia today to meet with her brother and that key Pheu Thai Party figures have agreed to her nomination of being their Party's candidate for PM. (which contradicts what the Pheu Thai Party deputy spokesman was saying yesterday.

Turmoil and division clearly remain to dog the Party.

What Chaiyasit didn't reveal was how having Pheu Thai Party winning the election makes one iota of difference in seeking a Royal Pardon. There's no requirement for that to occur. The pardon has already been requested and whether or not PTP wins or doesn't win doesn't change the status of that request nor have any impact in whether or not a new request is submitted.

Ms. Yingluck meeting Thaksin in Russia today

BANGKOK, 16 April 2011 (NNT)-Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's legal adviser Noppadol Pattama has revealed yesterday that Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra, Mr. Thaksin’s younger sister, will be visiting her brother in Russia today. He denied knowing whether they will be looking for a candidate for the Prime Minister position.

Meanwhile, Mr. Noppadol said following the request by a group of MPs led by Mr. Mingkwan Saengsuwan for Mr. Thaksin to reveal the Pheu Thai Party’s PM candidates that it would be disclosed immediately after the House dissolution.

Let's hope we get some resolution.. but it's doubtful alas... I just want the party in power to have a REAL mandate - but there's too many parties!

Many political parties competing in an election is a sign of a healthy democracy, I would say. A situation with one party having a large majority and the party leader / PM saying 'we will continue to rule for twenty years' is NOT a healthy democracy. IMHO

Indeed, anyone that wants fewer parties lack the basic understanding of Democracy and voter-distribution on issues and the outcome of this versus a few solid parties,

Pheu Thai: No Objections To Yingluck Nomination

It would seem that are some within Pheu Thai Party who are objecting to Thaksin's dominating role within the Party.

In an article in today's other paper, a number of PTP MP's have voiced their concern over his involvement due to his 5 year political ban which could jeopardize the Party's existence, his apparent selection of his sister to be the Party's candidate for PM, that he has gone back on his promise to keep the Party distinctly separate from the Red Shirts, and that he will have a determining role in deciding the Party's policies.

Sources have said the involved PTP MP's with these concerns, which include the group that backs Mingkwan, numbers 30 to 40 MP's.

Chaiyasit, Wan to run for Pheu Thai

Pheu Thai Party yesterday unveiled General Chaiyasit Shinawatra, cousin of former premier Thaksin, as its MP candidate for Ratchaburi constituency 1.

Four other candidates for the party in the western province are all local politicians: Pongsak Kitprasert, Sayan Changpanich, Wasan Tiengtrong and Amporn Penthamrongrat.

In Bangkok, deputy spokesman Jirayu Huangsap introduced two new MP candidates for the capital: Wan Yoobamrung and Anuttama Amornwiwat. Wan is the son of veteran politician and former Pheu Thai MP Chalerm, while Anuttama is daughter of former Department of Special Investigation Director-General and Police Chief Sombat.

Wan said he decided to run in the election as the popularity for his father and the party in the constituency was good. Anuttama, a former lecturer at Thammasat and Chulalongkorn universities, said she wanted to apply her knowledge and experience to develop Thai education.

Some of the big cheeses are voting with their feet. They are well aware that Thaksin is leaving all of this to the last minute so no effective revolt can take place whatever the decision. Thaksin will use the remaining time to ascertain who can be bought off and for how much, but the more important thing is that he will be controlling the process. Absolutely central. It is a good time to be a member of the Thaksin family. Previous experience as a glove-puppet not necessary.

Now that Thaksin has marched on to the stage, be it though via satellite link from another country, and made it absolutely clear that he is the one running the show and devising policies, then anybody not of the Thaksin family, stepping forward to be the new leader of the party will look like a complete dummy the moment he is appointed. On the other hand having his sister as the leader will not have journalists and analysts questioning her place in the hierarchy. Her duty to serve.
