KUALA LUMPUR (BNO NEWS) -- The Malaysian government will soon assign an official e-mail address to nearly 18 million of its citizens, according to a local media report on Tuesday.

The Star newspaper reported that the 1Malaysia Email project will allow direct and secure communications between the public and the government. It will be used to send statements, bills and other notices from the government.

"Hopefully, we can get it ready by July this year," Tricubes Bhd CEO Khairun Zainal Mokhtar told a news conference, The Star reported. Tricubes Bhd is the company developing the project in collaboration with Microsoft.

Khairun said Tricubes Bhd will also lead the development of a web portal which will include social networking services, online bill checking and payments. "Currently, the company is still running stress tests for the portal," he added.

The e-mail addresses will be provided to all Malaysians who are at least 18 years old. The Asian country has a population of 27.5 million, 17.7 million of which are adults.

Good idea, now all they need is a computer!!

I know there are internet cafes but I certainly wouldn't want to use one, especially for paying bills etc.

You can bet your bottom dollar the 'religious police' will have full access to the 'social networking services'... Hackers will be eagerly awaiting the rest!
