JALALABAD, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 13 people were killed and 21 others were injured in eastern Afghanistan when an explosive-filled vehicle was driven into a bus carrying police cadets, officials said.

The suicide attack occurred in Jalalabad, in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province at around 5 p.m. local time, near a police training center on the Jalalabad-Torkham highway, governor's spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Among the 13 dead were both cadets and civilians, but Abdulzai did not confirmed the exact figure, adding that several of the injured were in critical condition.

The powerful blast also damaged at least six vehicles and one shop surrounding the scene of the explosion.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, meanwhile, claimed responsibility of the attack on behalf of the group's rebel fighters.
