HIGHWAY POLICE WILL LAUNCH VEHICLE OPERATORS' ID CARDS TO MONITOR BUS DRIVERS

The Superintendent of the Highway Police is preparing to launch a project to issue vehicle operating cards for drivers, in an attempt to reduce road accidents.

Pol. Maj. Gen. SUWIRA SONGMETTA (สุวิระ ทรงเมตตา), the Highway Police Division's superintendent, spoke on the issuance of vehicle operators' I.D. cards to bus drivers. The initiative is aimed at restricting drivers and reducing road accidents. The cards will be put into use for the first time on October 25th at the Bangphlee(บางพลี) highway command in Samutprakarn Province. If successful, the initiative will then be implemented at major bus terminals in Bangkok before the new year arrives. Implementation will then be expanded to various provinces.

Superintendent SUWIRA said the aim is to issue bus drivers, truck drivers, and ordinary drivers with the card, which will show a record of driving performances for further inspection.

Pol. Maj. Gen. SUWIRA disclosed that the new vehicle operator IDs will look similiar to a passport, and a driving history will be recorded onto the ID in order to facilitate inspections on any past conducts of illegal driving. In the future, the data on the IDs will also be linked to the Royal Thai Police's crime database.

This part of the article I found particularly disturbing... :D

Picture the scenario of the typical police shakedown on country roads of the falung driver... the BIB asking you how much it's worth to keep your "record of driving performances" in good condition... :o

How about the highway police actually PULLING PEOPLE OVER that drive like crazy (or, my gosh, even break traffic laws!), and then giving them a hefty fine.

Interesting, to think that high technology is the saviour for logical handicaps.

This sounds a lot like what happens with regard to disciplining hi-so types in schools- they make a rule, then the parent makes an excuse, so they make another rule, and the parent makes another excuse...

"but you didn't SAY that we had to answer every question on the final..."

so they get to take it again- next final time

"but you didn't SAY we only could mark one answer on every multiple choice question...." etc., etc., etc.

This in a continuing effort to come up with something that actually resembles discipline or a society of law- but constantly failing because of the lack of will to enforce it. Rather than enforce a law, simpler to make a new one!

Too expensive to implement - no worries. Maybe it can be put into place for the official long-haul bus route drivers out of Ekkamai and MoChit, and a good thing too for that case. But to put this in place for all drivers would be much harder.

It's O.K. it is already yesterdays news.

Something else will take everyones interest tomorrow.

Seems to be just the way here.

You know you just have to make the paper full to sell it.

What ever happened to those smart I.D. cards. Why not store it on them. Ooops. That's right that's old news.

Maybe if the drivers were taught how to drive properly in the first place and had to take a thorough driving test instead of dropping 500 baht into someones pocket then there would be a reduction in road accidents. :o

Makes you wonder what they're trying to achieve...

Meanwhile, all over the country you can buy and wear t-shirts, jackets and windshield stickers that say "police"...

New id card = more dosh, those who don't possess it = much more dosh. :o

So what Brit is saying is it's essentially a discount card....

Speeding with "ID Card": 100B*

Speeding w/o "ID Card": 250B*

*Actual "tips" may vary.
