Saw in the Thai news today that Phayao is either number 1 or 2 in the country for AIDS. There was an article a long time ago about AIDS in Thailand and epicicenter in Thailand was in Phayao province. After all these years, Phayao still leading the country for AIDS? Does not make sense.

It's a sad fact that in in the early days after the VN War, many of the wenches from that region were sent to work in Bangkok and elsewhere in the "trade". Dok Kham Tai became famous for it hence all the (now expensive) teak houses etc. built from monies sent home to that purpose. At least thats' teh way I heard the story years ago.

I don't know if there is a connection but it might make sense if there was.

Someone obviously, still has a lot to learn about Thailand. :whistling:

While the Isaan girls are notorious for being involved in the western oriented nightlife, the northern girls have been, and still are, sought after in the much larger Thai and Asian nightlife.

There are many articles about AIDS in Thailand with Phayao and women from Dok kham tai about the 90's and was the epicenter of where women came from. Yes, they went to bars in different places to support their family. In Dok kham Tai, My best friend (Thai) who was my next door neighbor and worked for the governmant, came down with AIDS in 1999 and died a few years later. My wife's 2 high school friends (old then in 2001) their daughters came back from Japan and while made a lot of money, they died within 2 years. Phayao /Dok kham tai area is noted for fair skinned and beautiful girls whose parents were very poor in the 90's and worked whatever before AIDS was well known. My original post was based that this area still being noted as an AIDS area which I also find it hard to believe. My wife's nieces are nurses at Phayao hospital and a school teacher and have said no way that article could be true now.

Unfortunately it is true, Phayao province does have a very high rate of HIV/Aids, possibly the highest in Thailand.

Why is it so hard to believe if the statistics address a rate, ie a percentage of the population HIV+ or full blown AIDS?

Wind your short neck in and stop trolling on about nothing you know about !!

Thought you'd retired sunshine?! I've missed your early morning posts after a night on the ale

Hopefully a breathalyser that you can plug into your computer will be released soon to prevent clowns like you making daft posts while under the influence :realangry:

I knew this fact already as a good friend of mine worked with a charity down there but I've also heard similar from Thai friends. But I know that won't be good enough to convince you so here is a short statement taken from a Chief Thai government health worker 'Phuket now has the fourth-highest per capita incidence of Aids in Thailand, behind Ranong, Trat and Phayao provinces, she said.'

And here is another report from a United Nations site, hopefully your hangover isn't so bad that you can't read :o

So, Phayao does have the highest per capita rate of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, is an apology on the way? Didn't think so!

Finished in mid-70's and AjarnP said 'after the VN war'.

VF hit the nail on the head, Northern Thai girls have been much sought after in the sex trade in Thailand and elsewhere in Asia for many years and then returned home.

Indeed. The prostitutes in Phayao are used heavily by Thai truck drivers passing through.

There is a possiblity that Phayao officials were just more honest in reporting AIDS stats than their counterparts in other provinces. Chiang Mai province for example which has a large part of its income from tourism will not want to scare off tourist by saying that AIDS IS a big problem there. Hence the somewhat skewed results.

You mean to tell us that the oldest profession in the world did not come to Thailand until the 60's :cheesy:?

That's why i wrote the "Pattaya" sex industry and not simply the 'Sex' industry.

Intelligent farangs in Thailand with reading comprehension skills greater than their Thai counterparts are becoming a rarer occurrence these days and on the endangered list. Even the bar girls are starting to develop the ability to differentiate between the loser type farangs and the successful ones who can grasp the English language.
