Suspended PM Faces Criticism in Visit to Surin Amid Border Tensions

Amidst escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's recent visit to an evacuation centre in Surin has sparked controversy. She arrived to offer support and distribute essential supplies to residents displaced by ongoing skirmishes. However, the visit took a dramatic turn as a resident criticised the government’s perceived indifference.

On Sunday, Ms Paetongtarn travelled to Muang district, Surin, where tempers flared among evacuees frustrated by the government's slow response to the conflict. Chayanuch Choksukudom, displaced from her home in Kap Choeng district, approached the premier to voice her concerns.

As Ms Paetongtarn exited her vehicle, she walked directly into the shelter, seemingly not noticing Chayanuch. An aide assured Chayanuch that the prime minister would speak to her later, which led to an emotional reaction from Chayanuch who remarked, “So heartless.”

In a conversation with the media afterwards, Chayanuch expressed her disappointment. Referring to Ms Paetongtarn by her nickname, she said, “I feel so hurt by Ung Ing’s words. The government’s handling is very slow. Thai people should not die in vain. Right now, the whole country is in pain.”

She urged Ms Paetongtarn to rethink her strategies: “I want her to truly open her heart and see how much we’re suffering. We understand there are interests involved, but please, think again and act anew — for the nation and its people.”

This criticism is set against a backdrop of allegations that the border flare-up stems from a personal disagreement between Ms Paetongtarn's father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and Cambodian leader Hun Sen. The ruling Pheu Thai Party has denied these claims.

Ms Paetongtarn’s political career is currently in limbo, as she remains suspended from her role as prime minister pending a court decision regarding her controversial phone call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. Despite her suspension, she retains a cabinet position as the culture minister.

The situation underscores the mounting pressure on the Thai government to address the border conflict more effectively. For residents like Chayanuch, the visit amplified feelings of neglect, stirring public discourse on the state’s responsibilities during crises.

In this turbulent climate, Ms Paetongtarn's actions and the government’s next steps remain under intense scrutiny, leaving the nation to watch closely as events unfold.

Not being a PM at the moment, she must be there as the Culture Minister. My guess is she is getting ready to entertain this audience with a Thai dance...

On daddies orders, doubt she's even aware of what's going on.

Wife says in Thai chat groups the Ex-PM is being talked about quite badly for her even going to Surin. Many are complaining that she had no right to go there as her position now as Cultural minister. They are claiming she only went there for the photographs to promote her as it seems this OP has left out. Wife says there are a lot of thais pissed off with her about this now.

Her actions are not those of being the Cultural Minister.

She is no more Culture Minister, she is nothing.

I guess she can go wherever she likes as a politician & senior political leader. Some people are so irrational they wouldn't be pleased by anything she could reasonably or even unreasonably be expected to do.

THE most useless member of the family, and that's saying something. Never elected to anything. Never accomplished anything. Useless.

The Shinawatras are struggling to show the Thai people that, in spite of their former close friendship with Hun Sen, they are committed to the Thai cause. A tough ask, but they may just be succeeding. Time will tell.

...'2-Bit Theatrics'....(?)

Everybody who is concerned and wants to help actively by giving donations and emotions is welcome.

Media have a short memory?

She just can't seem to get anything right and she seems completely tone deaf and what she should be saying is Daddy you are an idiot, your instincts have fallen off a cliff, and stop advising me because everything you're telling me to do is just wrong. Shut up pops.

i DOUBT SHE EVEN KNOWS SHE WAS SUSPENDED.  Consider that she still sits inthe cabinet meeetings.  Also the other guy is a flunky of Thaksins

You hve to wonderif this whole thing is a way for Thaksin to try to save his party from disaster.

He and Hunsen have done a lot of nasty things in their lives.

What is really the harm to his daughter if she is found gulty

What do you think... buying votes to bring more money into their wealth by doing things like this... Happily the people are getting awake and see that they are not the family they pretend to be

I'm not sure they're pretending. But you're right they are finished. History.

Question; What about the army if People's Party will win next time?

Just wondering wher her father fits into all of this, what instructions he is giving and to who and what games he is playing / what his real objective is?

As Culture Minister she is responsible for the contraversial temple. She went to check out the newly erected barrier. As I said before,  she is also Minister of de Fence.😋

Last week 2 reports on the BBC World service and Radio 4, said the same thing: the two big guns Thaksin and Hun Sen, metaphorically, are locking horns, but as with most conflicts, it is the people in the middle that take all the brunt and pain.

She and her papa are part of the problem for this conflict

Wars usually make people fall behind leaders in charge, strong patriotism takes over.

This is probably good opportunity for them if they play it rite.

Not always.

Look at Chamberlain being ousted after 8 months of WW2.
