This year instead of send cards and presents back to the UK at stupid expense I have decided to donate the equivalent to one of the local orphanages ....I do not want to give money for obvious reasons so I was wondering what would be the best thing to donate ....food ,cloths .books etc? any sensible idea's would be appreciated..

Banglay, what a nice idea. I hate to agree with jehrecaholic, but it is probably a good idea to visit an orphanage, and ask what they need.
