CHIANG MAI, Dec 17 -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Saturday said she believed that foreign investors still have confidence in Thailand's economy and that many companies would not move their production bases out of Thailand.

In her weekly programme, "Yingluck Government meets the People," broadcast live on television for the first time this week from Waroros Market in Chiang Mai, the premier appeared live on air on the programme in which Mr Suranand Vejjajiva, a former minister to the prime minister's office, served as the moderator.

Ms Yingluck, in her first visit to her home town in Chiang Mai since taking office in August, said that foreign investors still have confidence in maintaining their plants in Thailand and have studied measures for a long-term flood prevention plan.

She said that in January, the Strategic Committee for Water Resources Management would come up with plans to assure and build confidence among foreign businessmen about flood prevention measures.

She said the overall flood situation was gradually improving but some areas were still under standing water including in Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Nakhon Pathom provinces.

Provincial governors were instructed to rush pumping of water to dry the areas as soon as possible as a new year gift for flood victims, she said.

The premier said she wanted to see December as a month for rehabilitation, particularly to tackle the garbage problem, so that people could return to their normal lives in January.

Deputy Prime Minister/Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit was assigned to look after the short and long term rehabilitation planning.

Ms Yingluck admitted that during recent months, the government could not achieve promised goals as planned because of the flood crisis, and only some projects had been successfully initiated, such as rice mortgage scheme, tax cut for first-home buyers, and tax cut for first-car buyers.

However, she said the government is still determined to further carry out the policies that were announced during the election campaign.

The premier said the government would continue promoting the tourism industry and invited the public to visit the International Horticultural Exposition Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011 in Chiang Mai. (MCOT online news)

"Provincial governors were instructed to rush pumping of water to dry the areas as soon as possible as a new year gift for flood victims, she said."

Does her generosity have no limits? Who ever said she isn't a woman of the people? Surely this is proof that she cares deeply about everyone and places them before herself and her family members. She's just so nice and genuine, and a nice smile too. How can Thailand possibly fail with her at the helm? How could foreign investors possibly doubt their investment in Thailand with such a competent leadership? Hmmmm

The least this government can do seeing her brother already got his 'New Year present' on the 26th of October. This type of behaviour is not stabilising or increasing confidence, but just confirms nothing has really changed in this beautiful land and foreign investors are assured of 'business as usual' or even 'improving' to good old times <_<

As a manager in a local office of a multinational multi-million dollar (multi-billion baht) company I can guarantee that as we literately have contracts with all three main sides in this sides and are seeking to expand the office further during 2012 and 2013 in terms of employees and revenue we don't wish there to be any coup or violent uprising from any side that will disrupt or endanger the ongoing life for our employees and our offices long-term planning and perceived stability within the company organization.

That being said - if any side, including the government, seemingly do their utmost to piss of one of the other sides and almost force a violent conflict to push things into their advantage, then that will be frowned upon. There is a clear wish to see things become...more normalized than they have been during the last years.

Maybe she should read some of the polls, taken in Thailand. Confidence begins at home. Her apparent understanding/concern of her duties as PM, concern for local population, without reviewing her background in government would throw suspicion on this remark along with so many others she has made.

(Off-topic, but yes, the products are 'expensive' [for a person] one could say. But we strictly operate B2B.)

I believe in angels or so sang Abba.

Once I eagerly awaited the tooth fairy, sat up all night hoping to catch Santa and expected to see mermaids at the sea side.

Then I grew up.

It seems others never did. But then cocooned in wealth and power in a corrrupt state where self worth seems to stem fromm the number of wrist watches you possess [ 95 at the last count] what else can you expect.

Very little in the way of joined up thinking or personal responsibility, public service or simply doing the right thing.

It's an opinion shared by many.

A number of people was expecting a coup in December. So far, all quiet on the eastern front ...

Wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New year

Investors love honest government, makes their investment feel secure!

Actually investors like a stable government and unfortunately see bribes as just an additional tax.

Western governments should go ahead with prosecuting companies that involved in illegal practices abroad, everybody will be a winner.

Sorry, it's the holiday season, a lot of wishful thinking, I will get better in February ....

"PM believes foreign investors still have confidence in Thailand"

Yingluck & Co Ltd. The hub of Thai jokes.

Although I do believe that whilst they still have cheap labour the multinationals will still be interested in opening up here?

Very true. And while Thailand still has the ridiculous draconian 51% ownership rule there will always be a struggle to attract overseas investment with full confidence.

Just think how much more investment would come here if foreigners had full confidence and FULL control..??

Scary how blind this place is..!!

Loved this paragraph.

Strategic Committee for Water Resources Management would come up with plans to assure and build confidence among foreign businessmen about flood prevention measures.

Not saying they will fix the fundamental problems, like after '95, but only...come up with plans to assure and build confidence among foreign businessmen

Bet she believes in Santa Claus too... :cheesy:

The Thai stock market is doing better then most Western stock markets.

Is that a sign?dry.gif

The stock market doesn't necessarily reflect real performance figures of companies. In fact SE Asian companies have historically offered very poor returns for shareholders. Thailand has experienced lift from the emerging markets trend and the recent global turmoil in debt. If you think things are exactly the same in the west as in SE Asia you are sorely mistaken and this sort of equivalency is often done by PC fools who don't have a clue as to how the finance world or business works.
