I just acquired the new Samsung tablet 7 " (with phone capabilities). It comes with 16 GB internal memory and an Micro SD slot.

I inserted a 32 GB Micro SD and mounted it. In my Samsung Galaxy Note I used an app "Move2SD" to move most apps to the SD card, but here it doesn't work. The program says, this is not supported by the device. Is that possible? Is it the Launcher? Or the SD card, who makes the problem?

Any help is appreciated.

Can you describe exactly what you are trying to do?

Which Android versions are you running on the Tablet and Note?

I see this in the description for Move 2 SD:

This app is not used to backup apps to SD card. It only helps you to move a portion of apps used space to SD card. You have to manually install the apps after switching to a new phone or hard reset.

So if you are attempting to migrate apps. from the Note to the Tablet this software cannot do that.

It looks like there is a non-root version of Move 2 SD?

If both devices are rooted you could use Titanium Back-up to back up apps on the Note (with or without data) and then restore them on the Tablet.

Maybe the speed class rating of the SD card is an issue? I remember a while ago when I was looking at 16GB and 32GB cards, that most of the ones here were Class 4, whereas in the US I saw lots of Class 10 for the same price. Maybe the Samsung tablet requires a certain minimum transfer speed and your card is below that standard?

FWIW, a Class 4 card is 4MB/s and a Class 10 card is 10MB/s.

It's a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 7.0" Plus. Android Ver. 3.2.

The Micro SD I am using is indeed rated Speed 4. I will try to find a higher speed Micro SD and see if that works.

What I did try was a 16 GB Micro SD, also Speed 4, and same result: Apps cannot be moved.

The Galaxy Note, by the way, runs on Android 2.3.

I'm still not sure what it is you're trying to do?

Are you sure Move2SD works (i.e.: designed to be compatible with) with Android 3.2? My guess is that it only works with 2.x.

Why the need to run apps off the SD card?

The ability to run apps off the SD card is an Android feature, and as far as I know, does not require a certain class level SD card.

Slight hijack (although similar subject)

In Settings > Storage it says that I have 13G free on my SD card and 10G available in USB storage.

What's USB storage?

Cheers

I think thats your hard drive.. what unit is it?

they just use odd names depending on how the ssd is mounted.

on my Samsung tab it refers to sd card and internal memory and internal device storage.

my zte blade phone says sd card and internal storage.

You have 16 GB (of extremely fast) storage integrated into your phone. You have 10 GB of that available for USB storage (now). That means you could copy 10 GB of data onto your phone's internal storage.

When mounted you would see two (2) hard drives; typically the first one listed would be this internal storage while the second one would be an external uSD card.

The Internal memory is only 16 GB, which is why I try to park some applications on the Micro SD.

I believe the app Move2SD works because it works fine on my other devices such as the Galaxy Note. And yes, Galaxy Note runs on Android 2.3. Could that be the reason? Is Android 3.2 not supporting this feature?

How many applications do you have? Maybe best to keep your apps on the internal storage; this is usually much, much, much faster than any external uSD card, and use the external uSD card for media?

Again, I am just guessing but I suspect, for now, the Move2SD app. was never designed or tested to run with Android 3.X. You could ask the developer.

OK, I have been able to identify the problem. Or as my friend would say: "It's not a bug, it's a feature!"

Android 3.2 does NOT allow the user to write on the SD Card from the phone. For the phone (or tablet), the SD card is "read only".

You can still write or copy stuff on it from an outside machine or when the device is connected say to a PC via USB cable. But the device itself cannot write on the SD card. Google's decision, it appears.

Why? Beats me, but reminds me a bit Apple's paternalistic attitude, which actually made me abandon iPhone and switch to Android. Arrgh! mad.gif

My Samsung Galaxy Tablet 7.0 Plus has only 16 GB.

Let's hope Andoid 4 will revort to the previous policy (3.1 and older).

A New Kind of SD Card Support

SD card support is one of those things that tablet users have been waiting for since the dawn of time, that being since they first purchased their tablet, the Motorola XOOM being an excellent example here. The XOOM launched with a tiny tab in the upper right of the device that pulled out to reveal two placeholder cards: one SIM and one microSD. With Android 3.2 comes SD card support, but not in the way you’re used to. Where in the past, with handsets that is, you’ve been able both read and write to microSD cards, in Android 3.2 for tablets, you’ll only be able to read.

What this means is that if you’re used to downloading apps and placing them on your microSD card so your build-in storage can remain free and open, you’re outta luck. Unless you’ve got a way to download apps on your PC and save them to the card outside the tablet, you’ll be only able to use the card for storage of media such as movies, photos, and music, again placed on the card with your PC and a card reader of some sort.

Given that the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 has 3.2 and a uSD slot I've got to believe there is some workaround or patch for this? Maybe have a search and read through XDA?

Anyway, this would seal the deal: run apps. in the internal memory, use the external memory for media.
