Pepper Spray Or Pepper Gun, Legal In Thailand ?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Do we finally know if pepper spray or pepper guns are legal to carry in Thailand ?

And do you know any company selling them, even if it's only for export ?

Any idea where to find info ?

Thank you so much for your help.

I have seen pepper spray for sale at the pharmacy counter in foodland pattaya. I have no idea if its legal to carry.

I don't know if it is legal, but I do bring it from my home country, and I think as it is not a gas like tear-gas, not even the X-Ray-machines at airports when entering the country do recognize it. Have brought it even into Singapore several times without any problems.

My reason to carry it with me on my travels is to be able to chase away street dogs, particularly at night, not to attack humans.....

It was a big help already in two cases walking at Seminyak Beach of Bali at night and in a quiet neighborhood of Mandalay at night as well.

Pepper Spray Or Pepper Gun, Legal In Thailand ?

NO!

I see pepper spray sold all over the streets of Pattaya

Must be similar status as prostitution, sold freely on the streets but still illegal.

I bought some at the pharmacy in Pattaya Foodland several years ago, but they no longer sell it.

When I moved to Hua Hin, I inquired on a local forum where to buy it and one suggestion was the front of the police station. I wasn't sure if they meant inside the station, or a shop nearby, so I went into the station with my (old, probably ineffective) pepper spray can and asked an officer where I could buy some. He quietly took me to the side and told me to put that away and not let anyone know that I had it. So, from that experience, I assumed it was illegal.

Then, someone else recommended a vendor on the third floor of Market Village, the large western shopping mall with Tesco and Home Pro. Lo and behold, several sizes and varieties for sale on an open table in the middle of the mall! So, now I still wonder of the legality.

FYI, I started carrying pepper spray on my long walks in the countryside in Jomtien as protection from the feral dogs. Never actually used it. One time a dog followed me snarling, but at a distance. I decided to just give a short burst of spray and the SOUND freaked him out and he ran away. There was no way I was close enough for the pepper to reach him that quickly. Live and learn.
