Songkran In Mukdahan

I have a house in Mukdahan and get up there every chance I can get.

I've been there many, many times and have been to most if not all of the local attractions, markets, tower, reserves and parks.

Mukdahan is a nice relaxing place and I plan to retire there one day.

My question is, is there or are there any other places of interest not to far from Mukdahan. Say a few hours drive?

I've been to Nakhom Phanom, into Lao and to most of the surrounding temples.

The reason i ask is that I'm planning to in Mukdahan over Songkran and would like to some exploring

It looks like you have seen it all as there is really not much to see around Mukdahan. You mentioned Temples but there is also the Catholic Church just north of Wan Yai on the Mekong, The Church of the 7 Martyrs, Interesting piece of local history. For golf if you play you have the 2 small courses in Muk and reasonably good 9 hole courses at Loeng Nok Tha and Amnat Charoen. In Savannakhett there is the Casino if you want that sort of action but not much else. The best food in Muk is at Mukdahan Manor's Waterfront - Song Fung Khong Restaurant, 2.5kl south of the Indo China Markets on the river. Apart from that bring your wet weather gear, have a good trip.

Thanks DJH77

Yes I've been to the church of the 7 Martyrs a couple of times and it is interesting. I've also had the pleasure of eating at Mukdahan Manor etc.

Not much of a golfer although wifey is, maybe I can caddy for her.

Oh well I will do some exploring and see what I find, maybe drive further up North or out West a bit.

I'm guessing there are no fishing parks within cooee?

If I find anything interesting I will drop a report on the forum.

Thanks again

Have you tried the suckling pig at Geng Kabao ? or a bit further afield Wat Pra Namtip near Roi Et (about 2-3 hour drive) well worth a visit

Hi Livingthedream, now that does sound good. My wife, along with every other Thai I know loves suckling pig. The best I've found has been in Lao across the friendship bridge.

Can you supply a few more details, no problem driving to Roi Et, or close by.

Craighj - Kaeng Kabao is about 4km north of the Catholic Church in Wan Yai on the same road. You will see it signposted. Its a well known for the 'rapids' when the river is low and a favourite swimming spot ( although I wouldn't go in the Mekong for anyone!) There are several restaurants serving the suckling pig (moo han) and you can also eat in one of several small salas overlooking the river . Its really well worth a visit. You can drive the scenic route all along the river road from Mukdahan which takes a while especially during songkran as you will be watered and powdered all the way as you pass each village, or you can take the highway 212 and turn right after approx 30km it is well sign posted. If you don't have google earth I would seriously think about getting it installed - I find it invaluable when planning routes. Hope this helps chok dee

A nice day trip from Mukdahan might be head down to Ubon to a place called Sam Pan Bok. It is interesting, if you love nature. It is a spot on the Mekhong that exposes many rocks with many crater like holes. It resembles scenes from the moon, showing its craters. It is only visible when the waters recede so should be good during Songkhran. It is on highway 2112 south of Kemmerat. There are a few eating shops on location and some good restaurants within a short drive or boat ride. You can do a search for Sam Pan Bok to get a preview. Just a suggestion if you are looking for a new place to experience.

Thanks to both of you, I now have 2 days filled. The other couple can be filled with family and normal activities when I'm home.

Appreciate the responses.

If you are ever are around Mukdahan drop me a note and I will buy you a beer.
