A Couple Of Questions On Learning Materials, Any Help Is Appreciated

Featured Replies

I've been self-studying Thai pretty intensively this year, and am finishing up Thai for Intermediate Learners by Benjawan Poomsan Becker. If you can help with either of these questions I'd really appreciate it.

1. I've been trying to find basic stuff I can read, but it's been hard. Traditional children's books tend to still contain a very large vocabulary universe (I would guess they pull words from the 5,000-10,000 most frequent Thai words), and also contain obscure "childish" words.

At the big bookstore at Emporium, they have a whole section of books for children native learners of English that I would love to find something similar for Thai children. The books feature stores written using only the top X most frequent words in the English language. There are the top 300 words, top 1,000, etc.

is there anything similar for Thai? Books featuring only the most common Thai words?

2. I've been considering the Chula intensive course, but don't have the time for its full-time nature. I would like to pick up the course materials and use them to self-study, perhaps even jumping in at a higher level at some point in the future if I have the time. I called them up and they said the materials are not available unless you take the class, but I remember reading a thread here one time where somebody said where you can buy them. Unfortunately, I'm unable to find that thread again.

Where can I find these materials?

Thanks.

Have you tried the Thomas Gething intermediate reader series? 56 lessons, with mp3/pdf, all free. Unlike a book/novel/children's story, the TGIRS is designed as for students of Thai......vocab and sentence patterns are often repeated, thus reinforcing learning. The mp3s are done in both a female and male voice.

You can get it all free at http://readingthai.wisc.edu/thai-reader-site-volume-1.html

Wow, that looks to be a great resource. Thanks!

Hmm, I don't see the mp3's you mentioned?

I think kokesaat means these lessons:

Thanks for adding that link.

Thanks for the excellent links kokesaat and eric67. Very much appreciated.

Chula does not sell their textbooks. They are available only to enrolled students. The books wouldn't help you much at all since they are not designed as stand-alone, but only to be used in conjunction with the class.

What's your exeperience ?

Those are some excellent links, thank you. I'm excited because I'm starting "Thai for Advanced Readers" and it looks to be about perfect for where I'm at now. But I see that after this book, there's virtually nothing else at the bookstore, just tons of books for beginners. The links here look to be a great next resource.

And here's another one I found. This is very much like what I was originally looking for in my original post. It's a series for Thai children learning to read Thai.

The links just keep getting better!

Hi folks thanks very much for the links above, very much appreciated, hopefully help get me past the very basic level I'm at at present. Now just to find the time.

Best Regards

I know this has probably been mentioned before, but since this is a thread for intermediate reading sources, I thought I should post this link too:

Mary Hass Intermediate Thai readings: http://www.seasite.niu.edu:85/thai/thaireader/frameset.htm

These look to be easier and have more useful vocabulary than "Thai for Advanced Readers". Though I don't know why the Thai characters on the side-bar are not showing up for me.
