December 22, 200520 yr Another request for help. I have guests coming over the christmas period who enjoy spicy food, they are from India. I promised them a night of Thai food. Any suggestions as to what I can serve? I would like to make it quite special. I know Thais don't do courses like farangs do, but I would like appetisers, starters, a mix of food for the main course and if possible dessert. I am in the UK at the moment so please consider the supplies available to me. Thanks ps I do cook a lot of Thai food, I am looking for inspiration...

December 22, 200520 yr Hey Tiger, I'm really lucky cos near where i live in North London we have a great big shopping mall called Oriental Plaza which is 3 floors of far eastern foodstalls ( they have a great foodcourt that mimics the street food experience!), restaurants, galleries & shops including an oriental supermarket. The supermarket is reasonably priced & offers thai ingredients such as: sweet & holy basil, morning glory, fish sauce, curry pastes, fresh galangal, bird shit chillies & much much more.... so when are you coming down mate??? For your thai meal, please remember to balance the meal in terms of flavours. An authentic thai meal will always have a good balance of salty, sweet, bitter, hot & sour flavours. here's my suggestion for a menu:- Starters - king prawn satay chicken in pandan leaves tod man pla ( thai fishcakes) Mains - Kaeng Kee-o wahn ( green & sweet curry) Tom Yam kung Pad gaprao mu ( pork fried with chillies & holy basil ) yam neua ( grilled beef spicy salad ) pla muk paw ( grilled marinated squid) Pad pak nam mun hoi ( stir fried veg in oyster sauce) Steamed jasmine rice Dessert - Gluai Guad kowee ( bananas cooked in coconut custard ) Good luck mate & what time should I swing by????
December 22, 200520 yr my dessert that i choose in my menu ..coz seem my main dish+starter is pretty heavy dished (with coconut milk) so i break it with light bowl as sweet-sour fruit in syrup (in TH call Loy Keaw) @Jaffy .. your menu look lovey

It's not exactly an adventurous menu as most of the dishes are already farang favourites and a lot depends on availability of fresh ingredients. If it was an informal gathering I would suggest a simple Isaan meal of; som tam khao nieow gai yang Simple to prepare, delicious, nutritious & the REAL taste of Isaan! ( washed down with some lao kao.... hic ! )

December 22, 200520 yr Author Thank you Bambina and Jaffy - loads of ideas here for me to ponder! I think the idea of balancing the flavours is the key to a sucessful evening. I'll let you know how I get on. It may be as late as new years eve so any other ideas would be appreciated... ps It is a really informal get together as these friends are really good friends of ours. We have both had each other for dinner many times.
