A friend who lives not far from me in Nai Harn was recently held up by knife point outside her gate ... the thieving bastards took her wallet with money & credit cards, iPhone, etc ... I hate to say it, but it's apparent that low season is on us as the crime in the news has shot up in the last week.

I live in Nai Harn/Rawai, and I don't drive around after 1:00 a.m. as I drive a scooter. Be careful out there!

Yes there was someone stabbed at Nai Harn a couple of weeks ago,it never made the press and the police did not want know.

Not being Inspector Clouseau but I would start with the gangs that hang around the lake that look at you like prey when you drive past them.

Also most of their bikes are missing there number plates.

I wonder why that is?

Here we go again , every low season the same/ same old story . Most of these poeple are drugs related and can not make money in low season . Now they have installed all these cameras in the area but seems to me nothing has changed .

i Just wand to trow the following question in the group , Do you think we would live safer and better with less bars ? and do you think a lot of the accidents and incidents are due to the late opening policy of the well know 2 late night spots . Would Rawai - Nai harn not more develope towards a '' Residential '' area ? .

My policy is , afther 19 Hr , out in the car , dont go to shit places as you will get shit , gate automatic open , stay in the car until gate is closed behind you so nobody can sneak in . If possible go never alone , dont carry to much money and dont flash around with fancy juwelry or Phone . Dont get pissed so you cant remember what you do .

The two late night venues certainly don't create a safe environment. You get people that are extremely intoxicated riding around in the wee hours and yabaa'd up teen gangs just waiting to pounce.

In regards to the point above about low season and people desperate for money, I went to the Rawai fish market and was leaving when a little girl says to me "20 baht" and I kept walking, then I heard the parents tell her older brother to chase after me and 10 seconds later a 6 year old boy was along side me saying " 20 baht". It's getting more and more like the PI with beggars and violence.

SteveL , I would never give these Kits a single bath , all is gooing to the mother's who is playing carts whole day in there tin shack . You have ever been around there , I did it's just redicilous , the woman are playing cards , the man are fishing (wel if you call stealing big shells from the sea and protected fish specy's for Bkk ) working it is Ok for me . I dont say they are all the same , but walk around , have a look and make your judgement .

Beside this all the fish that is sold there is from the big sea port or ratchapat in Phuket town , bought there and sold here.

I justvthink that there is to much influx of non Phuket thais in Phuket who all wand a piece of the falang cake , if they can't make it they will take it . Working seem's for a lot of poeple not an option .

Sorry, but what do I have to do with this?

I think mostly it's the young gangs at night, racing their motorbikes, experimenting with drugs who decide to target foreigners. I walk the lake every night after dark, and I have never been looked at like "prey" - I think most of the kids there are bored, and trying to make-out with the opposite sex.

There have been a lot of drug busts involving Thais in Nai Harn/Rawai recently, and to be fair, the lack of being able to sell certain substances might be raking on some people's nerves. This could also be a reason why foreigners are being targeted.

I just think it's smart to use your common sense. If you get pissed up, and it's extremely late, get a freaking motorbike taxi home. If you see someone suspicious following you, pull over as fast as you can - I've been followed before and pulled into a 7-11 and the kids rode on. Lastly, don't try to outrun these thugs...slow down, and they will fly past you.

In another poster's comments, they talk about not wanting to give money to beggars. So then just don't. I don't think that has anything to do with keeping this topic on thread.

Keep your wits about you, and you will be safe.

Please ask her to tell her story to local newspapers so that this event can be counted in to the statistics, which are available to aboard as well.

its still safe up north.. its rawai/naiharn pretty much

Don't bet on it.

Opportunity is what these guys look out for, be it at the sarasin bridge or promthep cape. Nai harn and rawai just have a concentrated group of expats in that area.

It's not just Nai Harn & Rawai. There are cases of the same in Phuket town, and friends of mine who live in Bang Tao have been robbed twice in the last few months.

She already has, and since then, moved from that house.

To be honest, I am not sure if she did or not.

From Post #11 link,

“They both [Cpl Rachaporn and his brother Dechaporn] saw Mr Eakkasit sitting on his parked motorbike. They attempted to stare him down, and then the three of them got into an argument.

“They all are still young and impetuous, so when they get angry they cannot control themselves,” said Lt Col Jumroon

The brothers had been released on bail, but the court officer declined to give any further information.

These cops are a pathetic excuse for a joke. Cold blooded Muderers now free.

I must have been daydreaming on my motorbike, or having a bit of a 'western moment', but I've just driven through a police checkpoint on Viset Road, just past the post office.

For my 'daydream second', my mind thought that the police could be stopping traffic to ask for information about the Chalong stabbing, or the Sai Yuan 'crash', or even the Kata murder.

Silly me. Just checking for licenses and tax - another money priority exercise. You'd really think that they'd be allocating resources to more important things going on at the moment. But, there again..........

As you know, real police work isn't profitable enough.
