femi fan
Can chiang mai citizens add places they know of where one can buy herbs? I'm hoping there are places with a wide range, and perhaps even places where i can know from the packet where the herb was grown, and any other information that comes with each herb. Could be the more western kind of herbs, chinese ones, or indian ayurvedic herbs... the more the merrier! I know a lot are sold in the worawot market, and will get over there shortly. Any other good places?
millwall_fan
Makro (Hang dong Rd) and Rimping (Meechok and Nim City) have a good range of all the popular herbs. As you have found out for yourself, the markets have quite a good selection of specialist Thai herbs. For Indian spices, there's a small shop on Kampangdin Rd almost opposite the Mae Ping Hotels Beer Garden and another on Thapae Rd, almost opposite the Siam Commercial Bank. jaideeguy
Are you looking for medicinal herbs or cooking herbs?? for cooking herbs, the above mentioned places have them, but for medicinal herbs, Wararot mkt has an Indian vendor inside the first floor, back in the corner nearest river and there is a Chineese herb shop across from the mkt.....left side facing river. Also there is a famous Chineese dr near the moat in the old city, but was there so long ago that I forget the exact location, but near Tapae gate. I am looking for a supplier of Thai herbs.....the kind used in 'yaa dong'.....steeped in Thai rice whisky. If anyone knows of a supplier of this, please post here. Thanks

If anyone knows of a supplier of this, please post here. If you find one, especially a shop or person who regularly makes his/her own herb blends then please let me know too. I used to find it just by asking around at markets; it almost seems like an under-the-counter type of thing these days. While big pharma chemicals are sold all over the place at any pharmacy. There's a place I've been to the North of Chiang Mai, maybe halfway between CM and Mae Taeng but a few km west up into the hills. Missus buys all her herbs there for the herbal compress they use at the spa... If I don't pm you the telephone number by late evening give me a prod... Have no idea if they'll have what you're looking for (and even less idea what's used in "yaa dong") but it has to be worth a phone call...

That's a chap i've been meaning to get to for a while. I can't work out exactly where you mean for the chinese herb shop across from the market. There is another Chinese medicinal herb shop and a google map on another thread on the CM forum....I'll look for it and post the link. gud luck

(Rimping etc have the curly parsley and I've been making do with that.) Flat (Italian) parsley is usually at Rim Ping from several vendors. Sometimes at Makro Hang Dong although I haven't seen it there lately. Often at Rim Ping it's hanging in plastic bags. Also at the Royal Project Store at the intersection of the canal road and Doi Suthep road. You should be able to find chives in the Thai vegetable section at Rim Ping, Makro or the local markets. Not precisely the same as western chives but very close. Also frequenty on offer are the flat (Chinese) chives but those are quite different from western chives.

Thank you for posting that!! Any vegetable plant? that is good for building stronger legs? Not sure what you mean by "building stronger legs?" Unless you mean vegatable plants that improve blood circulation which can improve mobility which strengthens muscles. Noi had extreme leg cramps for months after her cancer surgery on her upper leg just over 4 years ago. After much experimentation she found drinking "Bai-Yanang juice" eliminated this, as well as eliminating severe headaches she was experiencing. This discovery is the reason she started her herbal juice business. My guess is that the surgery (removal of quite a bit of flesh) blocked circulation. To those looking for medicinal plants visit Noi at her store and chat with her. Her English is pretty good. She has spent over 3 years researcing where to get various plants for her increasing line of Thai Herbal Juices. Her latest juice "Triphala" is quite interesting. A 2008 research paper from the Faculty of Medicine on Triphala here Now I know I will get pummled by some for unabashed promotion, so be it. ThaiHerbs
The only thing I can think of that just builds leg muscles is leg exercises. exactly, which is why I said improved blood circulation could (should) improve mobility, it is mobility (exercise) that strengthens muscle IMO "...plants that improve blood circulation which can improve mobility which strengthens muscles." The only thing I can think of that just builds leg muscles is leg exercises. If there are herbs that help with the nerve and blood supply, this can only be a good thing. You can do as much exercise as you like, but unless you are taking in the right amount of protein at every meal, with carbohydrates being the prominent macronutrient, you will not build muscle. Add to that poor nerve and blood supply and you can eat and exercise like a horse but your muscles will still atrophy. The importance of good nerve and blood supply is often overlooked in trying to build or maintain muscle. I would try the herb drinks, it's not as if they are expensive and what is there to lose? I would try the herb drinks, it's not as if they are expensive and what is there to lose? Everyone's body chemistry is different. Each person has an overabundance of some minerals/metals and lack/shortage of others (I have excessive copper and lack zinc so I supplement with zinc acetate capsules, zinc displaces copper so my Dr. told me and it worked for me). I also take a multi that does not contain copper. My point being each person has to experiment to find out what works for them, and then change when that no longer works. We are not static organizms, we are (our bodies are) continually changing and reacting. If anyone does NOT have an interest in developing a sensitivity to their individual needs, then continue on and best of luck. Doug
