NARATHIWAT, Aug 7 – One Thai army soldier was wounded in a bombing targeting a military-operated school bus near the entrance to Narathiwat Airport Tuesday afternoon.

The bombing took place on Narathiwat-Baan Torn Road, less than 50 metres from the gate to Narathiwat Airport.

Weighing about 20 kg, the bomb was put on a motorcycle sidecar. It was detonated when the bus was passing, but there were no students in the bus.

The bomb squad cut the mobile phone signal to deactivate two more bombs in 20 kg gas cylinders, which were believed to target the bomb response team.

Regarding the bombing at the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel on March 31, the court issued a warrant for another suspect, Jehma Wani, a suspected insurgent leader at the operational level. Two warrants had been earlier issued for the case, but all suspects remain at large.

As violence continues in the three Muslim-dominant southern border provinces, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra insisted the government’s strategy to quell the southern violence is on the right track and there is no plan to impose a curfew.

The premier will chair a security meeting on the southern insurgency tomorrow in an attempt to reduce violence in the region. She said the meeting was intended to improve the authorities’ operations and create more unity, she said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapa said that the idea to impose a curfew will not be raised at tomorrow’s meeting, but intelligence work will be the focus, with assessments to be conducted every month. (MCOT online news)

Police prepare security at Criminal Court

image_201208081525280556A7CA-BE86-5B48-4633C65BAF27991F.jpg

BANGKOK, Aug 8 -- Police will deploy 600 officers at the Criminal Court here on Thursday to provide security and ensure law and order when the Court considers revoking bail for 24 core leaders and member of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), including former Pheu Thai party listed MP Jatuporn Prompan.

Police spokesman Pol Maj-Gen Piya Uthayo said National Police Chief Pol Gen Prewpan Dhamapong ordered the agency to use a soft approach to the gathering of red shirt supporters expected to rally to give moral support to the 24 UDD activists.

It was expected that there would be some 3,000-5,000 Red Shirts gathered at the Court on Ratchadapisek Road, he said adding that Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commander Pol Maj-Gen Parinya Chansuriya was assigned to supervise the operation.

Gen Piya said that 600 police will be deployed at the Court and the Provincial Police Regions 1,2 and 7 were to be standing by to provide reinforcement.

He said the police are confident that the rally will take place peacefully.

The court on Wednesday is continuing its consideration of petitions to withdraw bail for the 24 Red Shirts, who face terrorism-related charges, and the examination of witnesses and evidence.

The court reportedly expected to complete the proceedings on Wednesday and decisions whether any violated their bail conditions necessitating revoking bail were to be made on a case by case basis, depending on evidence and witnesses. (MCOT online news)

Deputy PM Chalerm says negotiations work best to solve southern insurgency

BANGKOK, 8 August 2012 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yubumrung has indicated that the southern unrest would be best resolved via negotiations with the insurgents.

The Deputy Prime Minister also denied the Democrat Party’s claim saying that the government was trying to change its approach to solving the insurgency issue. He explained that Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa still takes the main responsibility of tackling the southern problem, but the Ministry of Interior has recently been involved more in the solution to help smoothen the coordination between provincial authorities and military units as both sides are under different lines of command.

Police Captain Chalerm said that he would inform Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra of the recent surrender of 40 insurgents. He said more of them were also expected to turn themselves in. He added that Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board Police General Adul Sangsingkaew has been assigned to consider whether the conditions proposed by those wishing to surrender to the police, are acceptable or not.
