Myanmar allows relatives to visit Thai detainees for first time

Boonleun Promprathan

The Nation

RANONG: -- For the first time since their arrests on July 4, almost all of the 92 Thais detained in Myanmar were given a chance to meet with their relatives yesterday.

The visit was arranged via the Thai authorities. The 92 detainees have been given threeandahalfyear jail terms for illegally entering Myanmar and encroaching on its forests.

Eightysix people related to the prisoners were escorted to Myanmar yesterday. When asked what he would do as soon as he arrived, Prachob Priklek, one of the relatives, said: "I think I will hug them and then cry."

Prachob was carrying a bag full of food, clothes and other basic necessities, which he was planning to distribute among his relatives. He said that since two members of his family had been arrested in Myanmar, he could hardly concentrate on his work.

"I am worried about them. I hope they get pardoned," the Nakhon Si Thammarat native said.

Colonel Pornsak Poonsawas, who heads the ThailandMyanmar Township Border Committee for RanongKoh Song, said the government and the Foreign Ministry were making arrangements to request a pardon.

"Now, thanks to help from Myanmar authorities, we have got lawyers for the Thai inmates," Pornsak said before leading the relatives to the Ban Kao Mile Prison in Myanmar's Koh Song (Kawthaung) province. He visited the detainees once before on Wednesday.

Pornpun Pupiangjai from the Thai Embassy in Myanmar said some of the detainees were suffering from allergies, flu and diabetes.

"Myanmar authorities have already provided some treatment, but we will ask the Ranong Hospital in Thailand to provide additional medication," Pornpun said.

The relatives were allowed visit from 9am to 1pm yesterday.

Fight against industrial estate goes on

The Nation

RAYONG: -- The battle launched by some 400 Rayong residents against the establishment of an industrial estate in their hometown has shown some progress, with the Rayong Administrative Court agreeing to hold a hearing on their complaints yesterday.

A total of 386 residents from Rayong's Bang Khai district submitted a petition to the court via the Stop Global Warming Association and the Eastern People's Network demanding that the establishment of Rayong Industrial Estate (Bang Khai) be scrapped.

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) board announced last April that it was setting up this industrial estate. The complainants also want this announcement to be cancelled.

They accused the IEAT, its board and IRPC of coming up with questionable environmental impact assessment and health impact assessment reports for the project.

"Locals have been fighting against the establishment of the estate all along, yet the work continues," SGWA president Srisuwan Janya said.

About 80 of the complainants were in court yesterday.

In the affidavit submitted to court, the complainants expressed concern that the new industrial estate would take water resources away from local farmers, pollute the environment and deprive local communities of the chance to develop their neighbourhood as a tourist attraction.

They demanded that the accused parties proceed in line with Clause 2 of the Constitution's Section 67, which calls for proper impact assessments for projects that might have a serious impact on the environment and natural resources. The complainants also want a Strategic Environmental Assessment to be conducted.

An IRPC representative told the court yesterday that the allegations against her company were groundless.

The court will issue a verdict on the case on August 31.

Deputy PM Yuthasak visits Pattani, inspecting response to southern border problems

image_201208100933470E616305-0C51-4766-8D2527B1B97673EB.jpg

BANGKOK, Aug 10 -- Deputy Prime Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapa on Friday flew to the southern province of Pattani to inspect police, military and other security agencies response to the ongoing southern border problems and to visit all agencies operating to deal with the violence and give them moral support.

Gen Yuthasak, in charge of security affairs, was accompanied by Defence Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol Suwanatat, Army chief Gen Prayuth Chanocha, Deputy National Police chief Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew and National Security Council chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree.

However, Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung have not accompanied Gen Yuthasak as earlier reported.

Gen Yuthasak was scheduled to visit Sirindhorn Camp in Pattani's Yarang district to review the latest developments in the southern border provinces and follow up measures implemented to address the problems.

He was expected to visit religious leaders and meet residents there before returning to Bangkok at 4pm.

Gen Yuthasak's trip, for only one day, follows his assignment to head the new operations centre, which will work on new strategies to restore peace in the restive south.

However, the new centre has drawn criticism particularly from the opposition Democrat party which said that the centre is just one more of a large number of agencies whose functions overlap, complicate and confuse the government response.

But Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra defended the government’s action, saying the new body would not overlap with existing agencies but would instead bring them together to follow the same strategy and work more effectively in dealing with the southern problems. (MCOT online news)
