Floods from Moei river leaves trail of damages in Mae Sot

TAK, 13 August 2012 (NNT) - The water level in the Moei River has receded after the river had overflowed its banks on Friday, flooding villages in Mae Sot district of Tak province.

Mae Sot Municipality was declared an emergency zone on Friday, following a recent bout of heavy rains. Residents living near the river, which forms the border between Thailand and Myanmar, have been told to evacuate and move their belongings to higher grounds.

The flooding has caused damage to property, household items as well as export products. 300 Japanese cars, which were scheduled to be delivered from Mae Sot to Myanmar’s Myawaddy, have been submerged in floodwater.

Head district officer of Mae Sot, Preecha Jaipetch, said the office is currently inspecting damage caused by the flash floods in and around the municipality.

He added that the district office has been allocated a budget of 3 million baht for flood rehabilitation projects and that Mae Sot Municipality is planning to construct more waterways to drain out the flood.

FTI confident car export this year to reach 1 million units

BANGKOK, 13 August 2012 (NNT) – The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has expressed its confidence that Thailand will export over 1 million cars this year, and that the industry will train the workforce in this field to accomodate the expansion.

Spokesman for the FTI’s Automotive Industry Club Surapong Paisitpattanapong revealed that Thailand exported over 456,000 vehicles in the first six months of the year. He added now all of the factories have fully recovered from the flood and resumed their operations; therefore, he believed the number will increase in the second half.

Although Thailand has enough skilled labors in this field, it will not be enough to sustain the expected rapid growth, said the Spokesman. The FTI is therefore cooperating with the Education and Labor Ministries in improving workers’ potentials to prepare them for the expansion and tougher competition in the future.

As for the 300-baht minimum wage, the spokesman expressed no concern over the impact of the raise, saying most large factories had been paying their workers over 300 baht per day before the raise even took effect; however, he is worried about small-and medium-sized companies, which will likely be affected by the wage rise.
