I have no visa - thought I'd be in thailand for less then 30 days. now I need to stay 10 days longer. guess I can't get any kind of extension here at immigration?

I wouldn't mind paying the fine for overstay, however I worry this could become a problem once I decided to apply for a work visa in the future.

thanks for your answers

It helps if you say where you are.

Immigration can give you a 10 day extension. Easy in Pattaya, a bit more time and trouble in Bangkok, just a form to fill out and a fee to pay.

Overstay not recommended. Make a border run if necessary.

go to the nearest Immigration n get a 10 days extention.

Try to avoid overstay , it is not a problem to pay the fine once at the border/exit point n no problem later on .

Just if you are caught during overstay period by the police for whatever reason(accident/drunk/drugs ,etc) you have real trouble.

Couldn't agree more. A friend of mine got caught riding his motorbike without a crash hat and when he went to the side of the road to pay his 200 Baht fine the policeman, a real "jobsworth" asked to see his passport. Like an idiot my friend gave it to him and the policeman noted he was on an overstay. All sorts of grief followed with my mate being marched down to the police station, local immigration being called in and ended up my friend paying his overstay, 5,000 Baht in corruption and promising to leave the next day on a border run. Without paying the 5 grand he was going to do a night in the cells - and you don't want that under ANY circumstances...!!!

Naturally if stopped for this you say the passport is at home/hotel but many people don't realise this, thinking always having your passport is a good thing. It just backs up the point that if you're stopped even for the smallest thing and your visa is expired you're are in all kinds of sh*t, particularly if you're a serial "border hopper"...!
