I carry an Alpha AWUS036NHR high gain USB amplifier with me. I find it amazing for picking up hotspots and amplifying the signal from as low as 2 bars to 4 or 5 bars.

Nice. I have the older Alfa AWUS036NH 2000mW model. Works great in Linux and easy to put in monitor mode and supports injection, even running from a VM. Oddly enough, I've yet to get it working normally under OSX. Those planning to buy one, who are not running Windows, should do some research before buying.

Additionally, for those interested in Alfa cards, there is a shop on the ground floor of Computer Plaza (north side of the moat) at prices comparable to Amazon. They also sell a few high gain omni antennas as well.

The thing I have not yet found here, are decent quality directional antennas. I have an old school Cantenna (http://www.cantenna.com/), but the stand mount broke off and I'd like to replace it. If anybody knows of a place selling directionals, please let me know.
