PHUKET: -- As the Christmas and New Year festive season draws closer, Phuket's residents are being asked to donate blood to ensure an adequate supply is available for hospitals to deal with emergencies.

The Phuket Regional Blood Center (PRBC) mobile donation clinic will be out and about during December to collect blood donations from the public.

“We need all blood types, but we especially want those with Rhesus-negative (Rh-) blood groups to step forward. We just don’t have enough Rh- blood,” said Pornthip Rattajak, Acting Chief of Phuket Regional Blood Center.

“We would like to invite all members of the public to come and donate blood,” she said.

The mobile donation clinic is PRBC’s chief method of maintaining adequate blood supplies for hospitals, not only in Phuket, but also Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, Satun and Ranong.

PRBC mobile clinics are scheduled to be held at the following locations this month:

December 11, 1pm to 4pm:

Royal Phuket Yacht Club Hotel

The Kee Resort Patong

December 17, 1pm to 5pm:

Bangkok Phuket Hospital

December 19, midday to 6pm:

Central Festival Phuket (Banking zone)

December 28, 10am to 3pm:

Duangjit Resort Phuket in Kathu

Donations can also be made at the PRBC at Saphan Hin.

I'd love to donate my A + blood, but because I lived in the UK until 1984 the Red Cross has said I can't because there was cow disease there back then. I haven't mooed once in the last 28 years, but they still say I can't donate my blood.

You might be carrier of the disease yet immune to it. The restriction could be as they are unable to check the blood of the crazy cow disease with reasonable cost. Therefore the risk of infecting one who might be affected of the disease is greater than the benefit of the given blood.

Was that everyone in the UK then or only those who had had blood transfusions or were otherwise in at risk categories?

Surely there are tests these days...
