Labour ministry campaigns against human trafficking

BANGKOK, Jan 13 – Thailand’s Labour Ministry asked operators in all kinds of businesses to help fight human trafficking, child labour exploitation and illegal drugs, after Thailand was put on the US-imposed Tier 2 Watch List for the third consecutive year.

Naruemon Tarndamrong, Advisor to the Minister of Labor, on Sunday presided over a caravan rally of almost 100 vehicles, campaigning against human trafficking and illegal narcotics.

The activity, held through cooperation of the state and the private sector, started at the minister’s office in Bangkok and ended at the Nongnooch Garden and Resort in Chonburi. Participants in the rally had to answer questions about human trafficking.

The US Trafficking in Persons (TiP) report put Thailand on the Tier 2 Watch List for three consecutive years. A country in the Tier 2 Watch List is not yet compliant to the maximum standards to combat trafficking in persons and is in danger of falling to Tier 3.

Mr Naruemon said all sectors have to work together to remove Thailand from the Tier 2 Watch List, believed to be involved in child and forced labour in shrimp, sugar cane, textile and pornography businesses.

If the situation continues, it may lead to the imposing of trade barriers or revoking trade aid to Thailand. Another problem is illegal drug abuse among labourers which could impact quality of goods and tarnish the country’s image, said she.

The Thai government is implementing measures to suppress illegal drugs and human trafficking to improve the country’s ranking in the next rating, she added. (MCOT online news)

So after ignoring the list for two years they find out in the third year that

The only language the government understands is money.

If they thought they could make money by bringing Thaksin back and putting him in jail he would be in jail next week.

This is excellent report on, how important human trafficking is to the Govt. and how widespread it is, at least in the fishing industry.

The Deputy labor minister gives a great explanation of why there is some minor problems. Of course the labor minister owns one of the biggest fish processing companies in Thailand.

Reports Of Abuse, Killings

The United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking interviewed fishermen on Thai boats who are from Myanmar, also known as Burma; 59 percent said they witnessed a murder by their captain.

The fishermen also said that captains often give workers drugs — mainly amphetamines — so they will keep working through the night.

Thais are very adept at making much ado about nothing, and much ado about everything. It depends which way the fart is blowing in the wind.

But when you get right down to it, absolute <deleted> gets done! Period! End of story!

Can the advisor to the Minister take his 100 vehicles up to the village where the parents just sold their daughter for 2000 bht. If they want to eradicate Human Trafficking best start at home.....right in the home!

The Thais do continue with this Sisyphean effort to lip service this trafficking issue when everyone knows they will do nothing. The wind is always blowing and there is always a strong flatulence emanating from Thailand on this and many other issues.

​Rallies don't stop anything (except traffic) legislation & prosecution is the best weapon, but as post #3 say's.. who is going to put themselves in jail.

The whole Thai culture is based on maximum profit for minimum expenditure.

This will only end when the threats of "Tier 3" become a reality instead of an idle threat.
