Tarit apologises to angry police chief over summons

BANGKOK: -- National police chief Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew and Department of Special Investigation (DSI) chief Tarit Pengdit are reported to have reconciled, following acrimony over the DSI's plan to summons Adul over the controversial police station project.

On Tuesday, Adul expressed his displeasure, insisting he wasn't involved in the case and warned the DSI to have complete evidence before calling on him for testimony. Yesterday Tarit expressed concern over a possible DSI-police conflict about the project probe which would affect the justice procedure. He apologised to Adul and insisted he had no intention of tarnishing the police force over this case.

Adul said he harboured no hard feelings and thanked Tarit for understanding. He said the two agencies could talk and co-operate.

Meanwhile, former acting police chief Pol General Pateep Tanprasert yesterday produced documents to explain to DSI about the much-delayed project to build 396 police stations, worth Bt5.84 billion, as well as 163 police flats, worth Bt3.7 billion.

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva urged Tarit to go ahead with the probe to demonstrate that everyone was under the same law. He said it seemed to him that Tarit's treatment of Adul was less severe than that Tarit handed out to Abhisit and fellow Democrat politicians who, despite cooperating with the DSI, were severely treated.

Abhisit said he could not understand why Pheu Thai candidate Pongsapat Pongcharoen had not explained clearly his involvement in the issue. He said Pongsapat knew he'd been the one proposing the hiring of PCC Development and Construction Co and thought that such action was legal.

Abhisit said this case had revealed the political agenda being taken against his group. The DSI should maintain its credibility after stating the law had been violated. If this was true, the person who had proposed the project was Pongsapat. Therefore Pongsapat should receive the same treatment that Abhisit and his colleagues had received.

Democrat MP and Opposition Whip leader Jurin Laksanawisit, in response to Deputy PM Chalerm Yoobumrung's challenge for them to file a motion in the House about the project, said he was willing to take up the challenge. But he thought Chalerm's comment was made merely to avoid embarrassment, because he knew the House meeting was to pass laws, not for considering motions. In the meantime, the opposition would raise the issue tomorrow.

If you allow me a minor correction . The three involved in Ang Pau's were lowly police officers, not Generals. With the salary those lowly underlings get one might even feel a bit of understanding for them. Mind you, they had to hand over a larger parts to their boss, a Lieutenant-Colonel if memory serves me. Police Generals don't involve themselves in minor gifts or grants

seems as if there might just be turf dispute arising and people are getting annoyed and anxious as to the possibility that less than ethical actions may well be brought out into the open.

Tarits opening of cans of worms may well result in a can of snakes being opened in error. Tarit be careful snakebites can be fatal and snakes are known to be cannibalistic.

Don't think so. Tarit has no control over his own life. He doesn't have the luxury (and balls) to think about a new career. Tarit has to do what his paymaster says or he will be punished.

Tarnish the image of the police force? Seriously you could make up a script funnier than this. There's is a reason that the uniforms are brown... it covers up the color of s*** although the stench clearly remains.

Just a quick thought that popped into my head whilst reading this thread.....do Thailand do exchange programs with police from other countries? I was thinking of maybe UK NZ or AUS police......what the fuc_k would a western cop make of a typical shift in Thailand! and can you imagine a BIB stepping out in front of some Glaswegian trucker in the UK (without his firearm) and demanding some tea money 5555555!

Big egos at work. Very pathetic. The National Police Chief would lose face if he were to comply with the summons that's why he's unhappy. Yet you would think that the National Police Chief would be more proactive and helpful in this investigation seeing as how it affects his own organisation. Maybe he's hiding something. Accountability is not something that's welcome by anyone in authority here in Thailand.

The DSI are correct to shake a few trees and see what falls out. Tarit looks smug now however his problems will start when his tenure comes to an end. He's expendable.
