Warfie probably means the year of manufacture of the XR3i, which is a version of the Ford Escort, a motor-car, and it seems that he did not get the joke. An Escort manufactured in 1997 would have been 14 years old in 2011, and it is this vehicle he buggered (damaged) by blowing its engine's head gasket. Obviously, the head gasket of a 14 year old car is more susceptible to damage than that of a new car.

In other words, the joke is not 16 years old, just needed a little knowledge about the innards of a motor vehicle to understand it.

I have drawn a picture for Warfie to illustrate the meaning of "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" and it just occurred to me that he may not have caught on to what the police understood when they read "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort". Warfie, if this should be the case please say so and I'm sure somebody will come along and draw also this picture for you (not graphically, though, please)

I'm not sure whether to actually respond or just laugh this off....

Either way, I'm having another giggle...

Thanks Maestro!
