A_Traveller
By the by and off topic but since it was raised, those with an historical grasp may recall that said "dead sheep" used his resignation speech to set in train the events which led to the demise of Margaret Thatcher's term as Prime Minister. Some sheep, who effectively succeed in doing what said Labour Chancellor [Denis Healey, in reality a long time friend of Geoffrey Howe] failed so to do. NeverSure
"According to Deep South Watch, which monitors the southern violence, more than 5,000 people have been killed and over 9,000 injured in more than 11,000 incidents, or about 3.5 a day, in the three southernmost provinces and the four districts of Songkhla since the violence erupted afresh in January 2004." Link This is serious chit, and a big deal for a country no bigger than Thailand, and especially when mostly confined to the South. This is classic Thai under-reporting of what they want to ignore. These people will kill anyone, anywhere, including their own. London train bombing, Australian Embassy bombing - no one is exempt. They believe that anyone who doesn't believe exactly as they do must die. To make things worse, they know of no higher calling than to die for their beliefs, and get their 72 virgins. Rarely have we ever had to deal with people who actually wanted to die, and take innocents including their own with them. 3.5 incidents per day in Thailand since 2004, and it's been going on a lot longer than that. I have no clue how to deal with this beyond killing every single one of them and then refusing access to the country to anyone from a country which breeds these terrorists. France is now 20% Muslim, and although not all of them are bad, France and the UK are ticking time bombs.

simple1
As US intelligence has allegedly identified Thailand as a transit point for extremists you would have to assume they know the identities of these people. Unless the US advice is purely based upon profiling a countries border control arrangements, the question is why are the extremists allowed to transit through Thailand. IMHO from the US POV they are not currently causing problems for the US and the US can continue to track them and gather data. From the Thai POV, they are not causing problems for Thailand, keep the tourist numbers up, stay for 6 days or longer, and spend B3000/day. Baerboxer
Nothing new here, the weak response from Thailand to be able to handle this sort of terror activity, over the years ,has made a laughing stock of their armed forces and Governments for the past thirty years and more so since 2002 and just down the road a major problem , two Muslim nations, one would be ranked at three. many people would rank usa as the leading terrorist country. At least the people that get bombed by americans every day, and there are a lot of them. But they are not farangs so they do not count, right? Stop being silly. You know what a terrorist is? Easy enough to research definitions these days, without even having to buy a dictionary.

Amazing to read people claiming this nonsense, but you've got to admit these analyses of other countries are a little like "report cards", like a Kindergarten teacher reporting on the students' behavior. Not that the US's reports aren't largely trustworthy (compared to reports from say, Iran and China on the same matter)...the controversial drone strikes in Pakistan are in a small area that is well-known to be used as training for terrorist attacks abroad, such as in Europe, and the area is outside of the control of Pakistan's central government...it's still ethically questionable but the basic justification is there... I'd be curious to see what they have to say about Malaysia, which seems like an even bigger destination for people from terrorist countries. No No, yesterday he started going after the BKK Governor again. It could be possible though that he was consolidating his second account in Dubai. That's why you haven't heard much of him lately. MILT
More fear mongering from the US? Since when is having relative "Freedom" the cause for problems? Seems the US has a fear of freedom? Another brilliant move from the US for making America safer by shoring up the lose ends in Thailand. NO FEAR NO terrorist's JOBS, EDUCATIONS and OPPORTUNITIES makes for a happy people all over the world. How about naming regions most likely of children and people starving, displaced from their families from the most powerful country in the world. Where is the war on famine, on exploitation of the weak and uneducated?

justathought
it is boringly obvious what the americans think. It would be refreshing to see what the Chinese or Indians think now that they are world powers. They are not as pretentious as the americans to announce such nonsense. Why dont you go find a link and share that with us. I you are so curious. I cannot find any links. Obviously, they wish to keep their opinions to themselves. Being a loud mouth in the diplomatic services can only lead to trouble. I presume neither China or India wish to create trouble for anyone. It should be added that China today gave a strong warning to outsiders (guess who) not to create problems in Asia for their own 'selfish reasons'.
